So I always loved Reaper...

Just like in Cubase.

I've never really used Cubase, but just when I'd learned Pro-Tools, I switched to Reaper. Reaper is cheap, quick, small (filesize), is constantly updated and improved and has a fantastic community around with with a close relationship to the developers. You can really tell that Reaper is their passion and I admire that. Sure we all want to see certain features that we miss from other DAWs, but I can imagine that it's difficult to keep everyone happy and these guys really are trying their best. Yes they know MIDI is not the best at the moment and are working on it. But it does quite a lot already (some much better than the competition) and is not a handicapped DAW like people often assume it to be. I'm telling you, learn the routing matrix and you'll be glad you did, that thing is amazing. I love not having to mess around with busses as much as I did in Pro-Tools.

That's the fx-chain, this is really handy because you can save for example an entire guitar fx-chain (eg. Revalver, IR, EQ etc.) in one go.
If you just want to easily access a specific plugin, increase the mixer vertically and you'll see your plugins there, click on one to open it.

Whoa, really? How?

Whoa, really? How?

Click the FX button on a channel. Up pops the FX-Chain window, and you'll see all of your plugins listed.
Right-click on a blank area on the left of this window (underneath where your plugins are listed), third option down is 'Save FX chain...'

To test, save your chain (give it a suitable name), then right-click again, but select 'Remove all FX'. To add your FX chain, right-click and select the second option down, 'Add FX chain'.

Hope that helps?

EDIT: Ah, you didn't mean that :)

I've browsed the official Reaper forum, and there was a topic about Reaper 3 alpha. It's not available from the main site, but it can be found here:
http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=28633
Note that this is an alpha version, so don't do any really important work with it.

I've installed it on my mac, and it's running much smoother than the current release. I've not tested the midi export yet, but they wrote on the forum:
"+ Export project MIDI as single or multitrack .MID file, with tempomap support". And the other new feature I really like in the alpha is the nested folders.

So they're really working on this. I hope there will be a stable release soon.
If they could make audio quantizing as easy and good as in Smaplitude 10, Reaper would be the best daw for me in all areas :)

One question to Logic users: is there a way to bypass an entire fx chain with one click? I'm trying to figure it out, but I
can't find it :ill:

I got sick of Cubase and those static FX slots, plus that crappy poor routing and moved to Reaper about 1 yr ago. Never regreted.

I'm curious about the MIDI in Reaper. In Ableton Live, I can't put MIDI effects such as "effects" that help you come up with chords, arpeggiate and stuff like that, on a MIDI track. Well, I can, but Live only allows one MIDI "generator" per MIDI track, and Live sees those MIDI plugins I mentioned, as "generators", so I can't put a REAL generator such as a synth on the same track. This is really crappy, so I can't benefit from any MIDI effects other than Live's built in MIDI effects. How does this work in Reaper? Can I download some random dude's MIDI effect, for example an arpeggiator, and put it before a synth on a track in Reaper, and then put some standard VST plugs after?

To do this in Live, I had to use a routing plugin, you know.. stuff like Console etc.

Also, I'm curious about automation and latency in Reaper. In Live, I've experienced some really idiotic stuff. While mixing my solo project, I had automated all the tracks at a certain latency setting on my soundcard, and then when I increased the latency, the automation was no longer coherent with my tracks. Everything got delayed, due to the latency. Why can't it just delay compensate the automation automatically? I had to go in and move every automation manually...

How does this work in Reaper? If I automate while running at 512 buffer size on my soundcard, and then bump it to 2048, does the automation envelopes get affected?

You can put as many midi effects as you wish before the synth, and as many vst plugins after as you wish (well, as many as your computer can handle :)).
In my experience the buffer size dos not affect the automation curves.

Allright, I'm finally trying it and really liking it so far.

But I'm having troubles with playback.
Perhaps someone knows what I'm doing wrong.

I'm trying the TESF project (mixing opportunity tread) which is 62 channels. Without any FX the performance reeds great (CPU 10%, RAM 130 MB / 2 GB) but still after about 20-30 seconds of playback the transport starts blinking red, the playback stutters and mutes.
I've tried changing the playback resample mode to the lowest setting but that made no difference.

Also I'm using a soundcard with ASIO drivers (buffer size set to max) and the ASIO driver is selected in reaper.

Anyone have had this kind of experience and know what i should try?

This sounds really interesting, I could really use something that lets use more than two inserts on a channel. (Cubase LE) But what is this about the Midi sucking? What's wrong with it?
