Ok, sorry to continue this, but I just wanted to dispel this little myth too. All the talk of "128kbps mp3s" doesn't reflect reality. Maybe it was true at one time, but shitty rips don't really exist anymore. Since I'm a nerd, I checked, and only 12% of my illegally downloaded albums came as low as 128kbps mp3 format, and most of those were from years ago. I'm sure the rest of your rant is all true for some people, but people have always listened to music casually; that issue is completely orthogonal to the CD vs. mp3 decision.
