So what happened to Mary?

unfortunately isn't there an official statement on what really happened, which totally was a SELL OUT move (not really)

with that said, I made a point to forget Tate's statement on the matter..

the way I like it to go, imo Nikki didn't do it.

"Every night the dreams return to haunt me, your rosary wrapped around your throat".

For some reason, that line always makes me think that Nikki did it. The memory is just a little too vivid.

"Empty room today, and here I sit, chalk outline upon the wall, I remember tracing it a thousand times the night she died".

Clearly he was hysterical that night, and now he's nuts. It just seems like he went through some traumatic experience....

I reckon he did it.

I just saw the band perform Mindcrime. They had actors, props, etc. I was surprised to find that after the end of Suite Sister Mary she was still alive, only to kill herself shortly after, at the urging of Dr. X. She sat in a chair, reached into a box and pulled out a gun. He told her to put it in her mouth and pull the trigger. She did so w/ little resistance.

Man, that sucks. I thought she was strangled / garroted, or at least, that's the condition she was in when Nikki found her.

I agree, it's not was I was expecting. Maybe that's the definitive answer, or just how it was played out this time around. Who knows. At the end of the show they played a video teaser for Mindcrime II. If I had doubts about the album before then, after seeing the video I'm not sure if I'll ever even bother to pick the album up. Shit sandwich.

Great line, but for me, not the line that reveals the truth. I never remember whether it's "Electric Requiem" or "Waiting for 22". But there's a moment when Nikki walks in and (I believe) finds Mary dead. He starts by simply saying, "Mary?". And then continues with, "Even in death, you still look sad".

Had he wanted her dead, he would have killed her at the church, when he killed Father William. Instead, he warned her, and told her they had to work together to keep her safe.

I always believed he discovered her body and was framed for her murder. The haunting dreams are only the image of discovering her dead body that he can't shake.

Yeah, but could his mind be playing tricks? His addiction just tore him in two, he became schizo (see: "The Needle Lies", which conveniently enough is just before "Electric Requiem" where he happens to find her dead).

Ever seen that movie, Angel Heart? I thought it could be something like that.

The mirror never lies...

I suppose it's possible. However, I always thought "The Needle Lies" was about the pain of breaking addiction.

"Cold and shaking, I crawled down alleys to try, and scrape away the tracks that marked me."

This sounds like him going through withdrawl. As a matter of fact, he was so serious about putting his drug past behind him, he literally cut the track marks from his arms:

"Carved my cure with the blade, that left me in scars, Now every time I'm weak, words scream from my arm."

So, if in "Suite Sister Mary" he is trying to save Mary, who he loves, and in the very next song, "The Needle Lies", he's kicking his addiction, I find it unlikely that he killed Mary without realizing what he was doing.

Right, i always thought that the beginning of "The Mission" is Father Williams shooting himself.

I've always thought this as well. (I've thought that Nikki gave Father Williams the gun, which is why he says "Thank You")

What a fantastic story that is open to so much personal interpretation.

Truly a masterpiece of the highest caliber.

I believe that's Nikki shooting the T.V. in his room, in a foreshadowing that he will kill Father William.

The story is definitely open for interpretation, which in and of itself is part of its brilliance. However, I think the line from "Suite Sister Mary" is pretty clear on Father William's demise:

The priest is cold and dead on his knees he fed,
from my barrel of death, he turned the Holy Water red,
as he died he said, "Thank you."
I just watched him bleed.

"From my barrel" and "I just watched him bleed" indicate that not only was Nikki there when Father William died, but it was from Nikki's barrel that the fatal shot came.

Additionally, I believe that Dr. X telling Nikki to "Get the Priest as well", follows the gun shot, which takes out the T.V. on which we hear Father William preaching.
