@morningstar: well i don't know too much about asteroids and all that, but i know that they go really fast, order of magnitudes faster than satellite parts
that's why they burn more when they hit the atmosphere
but still, even if a little rock makes it, it'll still be very speedy so it can impact very hard

about collision hazards monitorings, i read somwhere that there is monitoring 24/7, and from a lot of sources too
but it's not like just as simple as a a radar detecting an airplane on earth
in space you don't only have 360 degrees to watch out from; things can come from just about any possible direction; up, down, the rear, forward, the sides, and any combination of those
that makes it all the more difficult to detect incoming objects

The last scare, the one that passed within 150,000 miles we only didn't see until 3 or 4 days before it shot past us.

If there is only 3 or 4 days notification, there's not much you can do but hope it misses your continent.

I never heard about this, but I heard that an enormous asteroid may collide with the earth in the much more distant future, though I forget exactly what year.
