I was wondering if anyone else has songs that they've heard that for them "exemplify" certain genres... don't really know how else to put it, but you know, when someone says "death metal" what band do you hear in your head?

For me, Satyricon - Mother North is the song that I attach "black metal" to... also, whenever anyone is talking about technical death metal I always think of Cryptopsy - Crown of Horns. Any time anyone mentions avant garde metal I think of Arcturus - For to End Yet Again.

Hrm... trying to think of some more. Well, what do you guys think?

When someone says brutal death metal, I happen to think of Cryptopsy - "Crown of Horns" as well. It doesn't strike me as the most accurate example of technical, though...I dunno what would be better, however...

Also, Slayer's "Angel of Death" is everything thrash should be.

Good question, very hard to answer.... umm..

Defining progressive metal... let's see......................

Queensrÿche - Neue Regal
Opeth - Advent
Extol - Ember

Power metal:

Helloween - Halloween
Freedom Call - Freedom Call
Gamma Ray - Rebellion in Dreamland

on the more "epic/symphonic" side..

Rhapsody - Land of Immortals
Nightwish - Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean

Though I could put a lot of songs under these..

Oh..Gordian Knot defines ingenius instrumental music for me. :tickled:

Man I totally second the whole Metropolis Part 1 by Dream Theater being a defining progressive metal song... I think a lot of this has to do with when you heard the song relative to your experience with the genre.

For To End Yet Again : Avantgarde , sure
It's impossible to answer this question , too many songs

black metal = darkthrone - transilvanian hunger - i fuckin LOOOVE that track... that riff is so cold and oppressing...

that whole fucking wacked math-core overthetop technical stuff i owe to Dillinger Escape Plan's Come to Daddy - COME TO DADDDY, COME! TO DADDY!

btw, i agree, thrash is absolutely angel of death :D

and master of puppets is about as metal as metal comes.

The song that defines ALL metal is MANOWAR-Blood of the Kings!!! .
in fact any manowar song defines metal, loud, epic, fun, rousing and FUCKING AWESOME!

aside from-Death metal=Venom-black metal

black metal=Emperor-Wrath of the Tyrant/Satyricon Mother North

honestly though, Manowar and Dio have more metal defining moments that the dictionary of metalurgy.

Progressive Metal: Dream Theater - Pull Me Under
Thrash Metal: Slayer - Angel of Death
Black Metal: Dimmu Borgir - Mourning Palace
Heavy Metal: Iron Maiden - The Trooper
Power Metal: Helloween - Future World

Agreed. That one defines oldschool black metal.

You know Come To Daddy is a cover version and originally from the industrial/electro artist Aphex Twin?

Agreed again.

I have to add:
Doom Metal: My Dying Bride - The Crown Of Sympathy
Melodic Death Metal: At The Gates - Under A Serpent Sun
Avantgarde Metal: Every single song from the new Solefald album :D
