You have to invest in your education, be a good employee, invest a lot of effort and have the luck to get a good opportunity.

not an easy package to obtain myself missing the opportunity/luck part...

How many people do you know that in School their main goal was to be the most popular/cool guy in the school, making fun of teachers and ignoring the main reason of why we all were there, that was for learning?
I know a lot of them.
And what kind of jobs do they have?
The worst ones.
Do they complain about their opportunities?
They sure do.
Do they have the right to complain.
In my opinion NO.

I totally agree with u on this...however i´ve came to realise that they DO have jobs and i´m fucked in the butt since october (i´m crossing the desert here....and don´t see an oasis nearby, therfore the negativity)

Then I can tell some things about my life decisions that made a big difference in what I have today.

I suppose u attended “etic” right !? At some point in time i also did think of doing the same but i was allready in the 3rd year of law school and dropping out didn´t seem to be a good option..today i don´t know is i opted the right way, but hey...life´s decisions

So I returned to my hometown and started working in my family business. I have worked a lot, and invested a lot of effort on this company, being today one of the most important persons in the company, this has led me to earn some good money but as a downfall I always had very limited spare time to work in recording.

Yeah continuing your family business is a wise decision, especially if you´re in to it (congrats on your expansion).

TIME is very rare item.
I ´ve found this small piece of wisdom: when u have the time u don´t have the money and vice versa :meaning, one can have all the money in the world, but if one doesn´t have the time to enjoy it what´s the point of having all that?!?! Hope u do find the time to dedicate yourself to recording.

It all resumes to options that you take.

Fucking TRUE, i´ve been dealing with this this year, because i had a son and decided to leave the big city to be near him and mom,raising him in my hometown, the pitfall is my contract ended and i´ve been unemployed since october...without receiving anything from wellfare, which sucks badly

As you can see I had some opportunities, but more importantly than that, is that I had to make some choices in my life and invest a lot of effort to make things happen.

Don´t we all?

I have seen a lot of people complain about not having opportunities, but I don’t see them searching for them. They are waiting for opportunities to come to them, and as we all know that doesn’t happen.
Even when opportunities arrive they don’t invest much effort on them, unfortunately that’s Portuguese mentality, we all complain but we don’t do much to change things.

i don´t agree with generalisations, so i´ll disagree on this part and the all portuguese mentality thing...

Moral of the story is that you can make things happen only to a certain point, that’s for sure, but it depends mostly on you to make it happen or not and to what point.

Hi guys,

nice to hear some opinions about it all... I'm a pro sound-engineer in Coimbra. I studied in Germany and came here in 1995. Only in 2007 I was able to gather some stuff to build my own commercial studio. I just had to! I've been struggling like hell since then, to pay the rent, and all the costs involved. Luckily I can live from this because I do a lot of Live-Mixing and that is good income. The studio is doing fine but could do better if there were more people working here with me. Unfortunately there are no experienced sound-engineers around.

I agree with Eddy on the Portuguese mentality, and I can notice that he's a struggler, just like me... but with some headstart.

Actually I'm gonna have a friend of mine who works in video that I sometimes work with, to do a video of the studio.
It should happen this month or next month, but there isn't much to film

You can take a look in these studios report of a band I'm recording, just ignore the non-studio footage and you can have an idea of the studio.

I'm in the middle of a process of correcting my Control Room acoustics.

You can see the problem here:

Green - Left channel
Red - Right channel

I've done a lot, and I mean a lot, of measurements using different room setups and different locations of monitors and the sweet spot. (Pics on next post).

I have a Portuguese (actually he is Brazilian ) acoustical consultant and Martin Pilchner helping to determine the problem and the solution.

I haven't got the final solution yet, just some ideas of what has to be done, I'm still in the process of diagnosing what's happening.
I'm doing a lot of testing so that I know for sure what has to be done.

Here are some random pics of what I've been doing lately in terms of measurements.

Front left side rockwool panels taken out

Rockwool panels back in, Argosy console shelfs were taken out to test difference caused by reflections

I had to disconnect the Patchbay DB25 cables on the back to take the rack out to slide the console to the back (I'm glad that I bought a patch bay with DB25 connectors on the back )

Are you soffit mounting the speakers now? Apparently from what I've read, that gives you a really nice bottom end.

Hey Eddy, thanks for the extensive pics. Very cool.


Have you considered soffit mounting your ADAMs... you're probably getting your bass null due to what's coming out of the back of the speakers reflecting to the listening position out of phase with what's coming from the front.


It's asounding how much the bass will level out when your drop your monitors into soffits. I did an A/B comparison with my KRK's back when I was building my place & it was quite unreal.

Soffit mounting strikes me as the kind of thing that can very easily be done wrong, though I guess Eddy's budget isn't really an issue here, so I'm sure if he did do it he'd do it right Could the Barefoots be soffit-mounted? (cuz of the subs on the sides, I don't know the specifics of Soffit mounting)

It's not overly difficult. You just have to be very, very careful & measure correctly. But it's a pain in the ass if you ever want to change monitors! I went from KRK V8 to Event Precision 8's & we had to re-cut the holes.


The Barefoots can be mounted, but the subs have to be deactivated. I remember when he was designing them, he put in that feature specifically for soffit mounting.
