Roel de Haan: Toen ik vernam dat het Russische Stielas Storhett onderdak had gevonden bij het label Code666 was ik redelijk verbaasd. Het voorgaande werk van deze éénmansband bevatte nou niet echt de originaliteit die normaal gesproken associeer met dat label. Na beluistering van hun nieuwe album Expulse begrijp ik het stukken beter. Stielas Storhett heeft namelijk grotendeels het depressieve black metalkeurslijf achter zich gelaten en zich een andere stijl aangemeten. De band opteert nu voor een meer melancholische benadering. Vrij langzame black metal met treurige melodieën die sterke doom-invloeden bevatten. Daarin doen het vaak denken aan bands als October Tide en zelfs Mar De Grises. Tijdens regelmatig voorkomende akoestische interludes kan men Shining en gedurende de vele leads ook Opeth terughoren als invloed. De nummers hebben niet alledaagse structuren en het kan dan ook even duren om erin te komen. De band speelt met conventies door bijvoorbeeld het gebruik van saxofoon in het mooie titelnummer. Ik vind echter de productie wel te iel voor de muziek, een zwaarder geluid had denk ik beter gepast. Stielas Storhett is er in geslaagd om de duidelijk herkenbare invloeden een nieuwe context te geven en dat is knap. Puike plaat voor melancholisch aangelegde liefhebbers van black en doom metal. If there was ever a Post Black Metal/ Post Metal band that holds all the things that make them eriee , dark and different then Stielas Storhett would be it. This one name assault from Russia is jaw dropping in talent. If your fan of bands like Borknagar, Solefald, DHG and Azrael then this is for you. He even adds elements of Bethlehem and Ishahn into the project . I love the mix of Jazz, Blues, Prog, Post rock and Black metal into almost what is like Theatrical moments. Yes many of you are going to say this is Shining (Sweden) 2.0 but you need to dig deeper then that as there is so much more going on. Doom, Prog and Black metal all mixed in to fury that few can match. I hope Code666 can get this out to more then just the cult fan base that have grown over the yrs. Expluse is unique in a very good way.
code666) Il secondo album della one-man-band Stielas Storhett, esce a cinque anni dal precedente e sotto una gestazione considerevole. Damien T.G., cè lui dietro al monicker Stielas Storhett, ha composto Expulse tra il 2008 e il 2009 e ultimato le registrazioni alla fine dellestate 2010. Chitarre fragorose, pochissimi momenti veloci (capitano in Angel of Death e Two Lifless Month) e tante situazioni datmosfera, questo è il black metal del russo polistrumentista. Un black metal pregno di emozioni e stati danimo, capaci a volte di abbandonarlo totalmente e dirigersi verso territori più sul versante del rock psichedelico e introspettivo, come con lincipit della titletrack disegnato dal sassofono oppure nei momenti riflessivi di Hush-a-Bye e All Paths Lead to Oblivion. E pensare che Expulse viene aperto con le urla di una donna che fanno gelare il sangue, ma tutto quello che ne segue è unaltalena di suoni distorti, e non solo, ma con alto tasso melodico e con le parti black inclini a ripetere i propri riif, sullo stile di Burzum, con la differenza che i pezzi di Damien T.G. sono più dinamici e variabili. Rispetto al precedente EP SKD il sound è meno grezzo, le canzoni hanno più strutture e confereriscono a Expulse laspetto di una rlease matura e concepita con volubile sperimentazione.
Dalle fredde lande Russe ci giunge questa release targata Code 666, una scena che conosco davvero poco in verità e, anche se mi è nota lampiezza della sua offerta, devo confessare che finora i pochi gruppi ascoltati non hanno mai brillato per originalità rifacendosi fin troppo pedissequamente ai dominatori del genere. Considerazioni generali a parte, la band in esame riesce a proporre un sound piuttosto particolare, miscelando le sonorità tipiche della fu scena norvegese a soluzioni piuttosto personali che li fanno emergere dal magma della banalità imperante di questi ultimi lugubri tempi. Di potenzialità ce ne sono da vendere, il riffing è improntato su un interessante mix di dissonanze ed arpeggi ossessivi che danno luogo ad atmosfere deliranti e claustrofobiche. La band ogni tanto si concede anche ad aperture melodiche ben al di fuori del genere, ma su queste attenderei un maggior stato di maturazione, dato che licenze di questo tipo sono di tuttaltro che semplice composizione. Comunque, seppur il risultato non sia ancora ottimale su questo punto, non posso che applaudire alla voglia dei ragazzi di proporre qualcosa di personale invece di limitarsi alle solite solfe trite e ritrite. Nel complesso darei unampissima sufficienza al combo russo, vedendo ulteriori interessanti prospettive per i prossimi lavori, ritenendo questo disco meritevole quantomeno di un vostro ascolto, aggiungo che anche per coloro che non sono stretti fanatici del genere potrebbe essere una piacevole sorpresa.
