I think Gravetemple, which is really just Sunn O))) with Oren Ambarchi and Attila might be significantly darken than anything Sunn O))) has ever released.
Not sure why they went with a different band name there, since the sound and members are essentially the same.

The boris collab is probably my favorite. Anyone listen to Domkirke, the recent live album they did? it's pretty amazing (which I had to download due to no vinyl player :/)

By association with who? Their real ties are to the indie scene, which is where most of their marketing effort and success has come.

They have since made associations within the metal scene, and it's where a lot of metal fans randomly start listening to them and go "omg this isnt music wheres da rifz!" though.

I think he was referring to the fact that the people in the band started their career as metal musicians and have been in quite a few metal bands.

EDIT: lol ninja

I thought it was mostly metal fans coming from 'extreme' music who eat up anything that is called doom, combined with newer metal fans who have latched on to the drone and post-metal thing starting with the Isis explosion, even though they didn't technically start it.

It's all aesthetics. Sunn O))) aren't out to write songs that catch and hold the attention. Their music is the wallpaper for a darkened room. You have to look real hard to see its patterns and understand its relevance. Me, I'm not big into them; but I see why people do enjoy them. It's music that requires patience, and a willingness to listen. And even people who are willing to listen won't always enjoy it. It just isn't everyone's thing.

They have been extremely good at marketing their music to other groups of music fans including the indie scene but I don't think that is where a majority of their fans lay. I think a majority come from the noise/experimental/metal scenes.

yeah, lol @ indie fans even being open-minded enough for something like that. Most indie kids are only indie kids, and Sunn0o0o0Oo0OO)o0ooO isn't whimsical or combover enough to say the least. Metal fans are some of the only people around who actually branch out into music that is sometimes vastly different then our perceived norm.
