RIP Christopher Reeve.

Stem cell and all related research will always get my vote.

How dare you vote for finding cures to currently-incureable diseases and paralysis! That's un-American!

Maddox on Reeve

________the line of a seperate idea____________

do you worry that you're not liked
how long till you break
you're happy cause you smile
but how much can you fake
an ordinary boy an ordinary name
but ordinary's just not good enough today

alone I'm thinking
why is superman dead
is it in my head
we'll just laugh instead
you worry about the weather and
whether or not you should hate

are you worried about your faith
kneel down and obey
you're happy you're in love
you need someone to hate
an ordinary girl an ordinary waist
but ordinary's just not good enough today

doesn't anybody ever know that the
world's a subway...

I just thought it was quite poignant since Kerry actually referenced Reeve in the last debate when discussing stem cell research. I myself paid to have the cord blood cryogenically stored away for my first born.

I dunno, I think this is all pretty sad. I was 7 when I first saw Superman.

Well that might solidify Kerry winning, so Reeve did not die in vain! The Superman movies were a big part of growing up, definitely. Personally I wouldn't want to live like he did after the accident, but sucks he's dead anyhow.

Anybody remember that commercial for Dow (or something) that had Christopher Reeve walking? Oh man, that one got pulled awfully quick. It was creepy!

Yes, I saw that two Superbowls ago I think, and never saw it since.

Maddox has some good points like "why are cripples always looked upon sympathetically and non-cripples aren't" etc.

But the whole Reeve-didn't-give-a-shit-until-after-his-accident thing is just stupid. You think Michael J. Fox gave a damn before he got Parkinson's disease? Do you think Muhammed Ali gave a shit before he got sick? Do you think all of these Mothers Against Drunk Driving gave a shit beofre an accident changed their familes' lives? I highly doubt all of those.

It's called action/reaction you dumbass.

I think he brings up a good point that celebrities don't give a shit about anything until they are directly affected, and well, he's right. I don't agree with going on a crusade against them though, because it falls under a great good circumstances: yes Michael J. Fox is being selfish, but more importantly he's making a difference. Same with Reeve.

Either way, funny article. Aslo RIP Superman, didn't say that earlier.

But he's forgetting one huge importance: It's not just celebrities! If my fiance was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease tomorrow, you can bet your ass I'd start looking into foundations and medical centers and Michael J. FOx's phone number almost immediately. Am I being selfish by wanting to help her, even though I didn't give a shit about Parkinson's yesterday?

Sure, celebrities have publicity power, but it's really no different at the root of the problem.

J. is 100% right. It's not about being famous, it's about being human.

As for Mr. Reeves, I think his passing, at this point, is a blessing. I can't even imagine what it must be like to have to live like that, and become a burden to your loved ones. I hope that his family is well taken care of, so that they may eventually find some joy in their lives.

At the time when this aired, about 4 years ago, I was working for the biggest Paralyzed Veterans Organization on the East Coast and we were flooded with calls the next day. Paralyzed people just wondering if it was real ... it was spooky for a few days.

I must say, working for this organization was amazing. All the top executives were paralyzed. One guy used to drive to work from Albany to NYC every day !!! (for those not from NY, that is about a 3 hour drive).
I never felt like calling in sick. My problems were petty compared to these guys. And oddly enough this place was the most fun place I ever worked at. Bext job ever ...

The pressure sore that eventually led to the infection of Reeve, and his death, is the most common problem in paralyzed people. Basically since they cannot feel from the waist down, sometimes they don't shift their body and sores develop that cause infections.

Anyway, RIP SUPERMAN !!!

@lurch: Wow, that sounds like quite the humbling experience. I wish I had a job that mattered to the human experience instead of overcharging rich people in order to make other rich people richer.
