I'm curious - Isabel, how do you envision the abortion-as-a-failsafe method of birth control working, ideally?

I'm not encouraging anybody to stop using birth control. BUT condoms break, women forget to take their pills, hormone treatments occasionally don't work correctly. I agree with Reuben -- children should be taught from a relatively young age (before they're sexually active) the importance of birth control. And for the <1 percent chance that any of these methods fail, abortion should be an option to prevent unprepared parents from having unwanted children.

Also, think of the consequences that would result if abortion was illegalized. Besides women risking their health by going to unlicensed doctors, the number of single mothers and children in the (already overcrowded and unsafe) foster care system would skyrocket. God dammit, pro-life supporters are scum!!

The abortion debate would be far less acrimonious and important if the US government provided proper sex education and birth control instead of the medieval mindset we're in right now. Abortion should continue to be legal because, like Neal said, the world does not need more fucked-up, uncared-for, accidental children. However, it's pretty clearly a traumatic experience and should be a last resort; hence the need for better pre-emptive birth control. Of all the harmful, idiotic policies of the W administration, their smugly sanctimonious attitude towards sex education at home and abroad is the most inexcusably petty, medieval, and downright mean. Abortion foes should embrace the condom. It's their best friend.

I don't see a moral disconnect between supporting reproductive rights and opposing the death penalty - it takes a lot more than basic bodily functions to be alive.

I suppose this highlights how the debate really only rages in the U.S. The largest debate we've had since it was legalised was to reconsider the latest termination dates, and they've been revised twice in thirty years, down by a total of four weeks, as new scientific evidence has came about. As it stands I don't think a debate is actually occurring in the States, not in the mainstream at least.

It's the same with other hot-topics in U.S politics - guns (bizarre ruling today, btw), gay marriage etc - they're weighed down intensely by the spewing out of partisan literature from idiots and fanatics. The room for sensible discourse once all the yelling, shouting and demonstrations have taken place is very small indeed.

Just because it has a face does not mean it's necessarily alive. That transfers into the abortion debate too - just because it resembles a human being does not mean it's anything other than crude arrangement of cells.

It's very strange indeed. The NRA now intend to challenge similar laws across the entire country, while anti-gun lobby are spouting the usual slippery-slope arguments.

I don't see why it's a federal matter. One wonders why each individual state does not legislate on the topic based on the democratic wishes of its inhabitants. I suppose it comes down to the same feelings that slave-owners once had - if too many states are against it, we'll eventually be squeezed out.

I'd take it farther than that... I go as far as saying any member of our species whom cannot maintain themselves in a generally humane way, are incapable of thinking for themselves, and just make plain bad decisions that reflect badly on those around them should have a different classing than humans. I vote for that class being French-Canadian.
