If you check out nightwish for this kind of thing check out "Oceanborn" or something from about that period, back then they actually had complex music and lots of strings and stuff, on the later cds it's basically just a bunch of powerchords and annoying melodies.

EDIT: I was reallllly bored at work so I listened to all of century child and once and i guess i just heard all the bad songs on them, there is some pretty damn impressive orchestration on them that outdoes the synths on the earlier stuff even if the songs aren't as good, so check out anything but their new one for things in this vein :p
