Symphony X- Paradise Lost

It's pretty much exactly what I expect from SX - it doesn't break any new ground, but it's still great chops and great singing. I'll be glad to add it to my collection when it's released.

That's exactly what Symphony X seems to be like; very consistent. The heavy songs have chunky guitars and raspy singing on the verge of growling. The more ballad-esque songs have a very open sounding, modal keyboard part and clean guitars to support it. I hope once I hear the album all the way through I hear something that surprises me, because Symphony X, though excellent musicians and great writers, have never surprised me.

This new one rules ... a buddy aptly described it as The Odyssey meets The Divine Wings Of Tragedy. It might actually be their heaviest disc to date

This made me kinda excited about picking this disc up. And now that I've listed to those too damn short teaser clips........:notworthy

I think this is typical prog metal without anything really great in terms of hooks. I'd like to see more bands learn what Threshold learned on this last cd and work more toward those ends.

Ultimatley, this will keep Symphony X right where they've always been in the metal market but advance them in no way that I can see. I was never a fan and this cd changes me not one bit.

I think this disc will help endear them to a wider Metal audience. While this disc still has the fantastic musicianship that SX has always been known for, it also has a much more Metal vibe to it.

I was with you on Unia not having any hooks, but I think Paradise Lost has some excellent ones. "Set the World on Fire", "Paradise Lost", and "Eve of Seduction" in particular have hooks that reached out and grabbed me by the balls the first time I heard them.

Domination too! :kickass:

This is like Symphony X on Steroids, its freaking HUGE!!!!!My god, who pissed in Romeo's Wheaties, he is redefining progressive shred with this release, the hooks are unreal...

Agreed. The only SX disc I own is V, and I rarely listen to it. I like Paradise Lost though. It does not seem that different from the typical SX sound, but it's more engaging. I appreciate the heaviness of the riffage and the angrier vocals.

For once we agree 100%! I thought the same thing!

V is definitely the CD that sounds the least like all the others so that isn't really a safe comparison (although V is still a killer disk). The heaviness and angrier vocals aren't new if you are familiar with The Odyssey, TDWoT, or even TiO and TDG. If you like that aspect, go out and buy Odyssey and TDWoT today!
