Symphony X- Paradise Lost

V is definitely the CD that sounds the least like all the others so that isn't really a safe comparison (although V is still a killer disk). The heaviness and angrier vocals aren't new if you are familiar with The Odyssey, TDWoT, or even TiO and TDG. If you like that aspect, go out and buy Odyssey and TDWoT today!

I have heard all of SX's discs. I did not care much for any of them other than V and a few songs on Divine Wings of Tragedy. I realize V is an outlier in the SX discography. That's probably why I like it. It does not seem like people think Paradise Lost is an outlier though. I will leave that determination to those far more familiar with the band than I. All I know is that I find the songwriting on Paradise Lost to be more to my taste than the writing on the other albums, excepting V.

Disagree. Russ has always moved between a raw sound and a smooth sound, as required by the music. However, on Paradise Lost, there are many times when it almost sounds like he's growling. His vocals are much more aggressive on this disc than previous releases.

Hey dude,

I was only really comparing it to V since that is the only disk he owns. He was pretty evil sounding on Odyssey too, but I haven't used my evil meter on this one yet to measure the amount of growl. ;) But I definitely believe you since we actually tend to agree on music (which is pretty rare on this board). :kickass:

I know we can agree on this -- it kicks ASS!!

For those looking for something else with Paradise Lost... consider listening to a different band. SX has defined what they are. Sure, they may change a bit vocally, but nothing drastic. We may occasionally hear a few different sounds, but overall their sound is what it is. Just what the fuck were some of you expecting???

...as opposed to the way SymX has handled theirs
In Metal especially, I think this is somewhat irrelevant. People who are going to buy what they like, will buy what they like, regardless of when something leaks. People for whom MP3s are "good enough", will simply download DT's disc closer to the release date.

For the most part, people who listen to bands like SX are music fanatics who can't wait to lay their hands on the actual product.

meh :erk: ...new DT hasn't been released yet :p

BTW - looks like the DT camp is handling the release of the new one pretty well...as opposed to the way SymX has handled theirs :Smug:

What do you mean by handling it well? Oh, and the new DT is nowhere near as good as Paradise Lost.

Handling...meaning updates about the new release or lack thereof as opposed to the way DT has done it...releasing mp3 d/l for 1 of the songs, video release, etc. I've read how miffed some of the fans are about the leak and the minimal & misleading info about the release.

It's good to see you have an opinion about the DT/SX releases...l have one as well...it's not the same as yours. Isn't diversity great?

I have heard the entire new Dream Theater album, and, as much as it's the best album since Scenes from a Memory, it's not enough to be album of the year. Lots of new experimentations and influences (especially heavy Opeth ones in the song Repentance and Muse ones on Prophets of War), but it's still not a 10/10. Check it out when it comes out. Really interesting and worth album.

That's all I need to hear. I'll be getting it.

Who am I kidding - > I'd be getting it anyway. It's Dream Theater.
