System of a down?

I used to think the same, until about a month after I bought the two new albums. Then I realised that I was being retarded and the new music was boring and generic (in general but also when compared to their older music which is clearly more influenced by the music of their homeland thus in my books making it more interesting music to listen to).
I also wouldnt say that Malakian's riffs are extremely effective. Theyre certainly simple and yes, granted that sometimes works but not all the time in this band's case. I also can't fucking stand the guy's singing voice. I enjoy Tankians vocals but as soon as Malakian starts whining his nose off down the mic I cringe ridiculously.

I never liked this BAND! Except for maybe learning the riff to B.Y.O.B.

I think they are full of shite.

BTW, I hate joke bands and bands who don't take themselves seriously.

I love Serj's voice but personally, I despise Daron's. It sounds like a cat being raped in a hurricane and completely detracts from the new albums. Toxicity was the first 'metal' of sorts music that I ever listened to so I have a soft spot for them. I agree with Daz on the new albums... I'm completely bored of them. Except maybe Lost in Hollywood, which is one of the few songs that Daron's voice contributes something positive.

What albums would you say sound like Mesmerize/Hypnotize? And believe me, the Armenian influences are still very much present on Mesmerize/Hypnotize, they are just less obvious and more integrated into the songs, which contain influences from countless other genres.

Daron can't sing, period. But I still very much like his vocal contributions. He is just a totally different singer then Serj, they complement each other very well
IMO. Yes, his voice is very whiney, but that just fits perfectly, like on Cigago when he goes "My cock is much bigger then yours", perfect and genius. On Old School Hollywood it's meant to sound whiney cause well, he is whining in the verses basicely.

Then youve come to the right place.

This was in the wrong section when I searched it. Was there even a Non-Opeth talk section in 2001?

You got a point there, the off-topic is kind of a new thing... Carry on ;)

I absolutely destest "Lonely Day"

but I still love SOAD :) ...They were kind of my gateway to heavier music several years ago...

Lonely Day is the perfect cliche love ballad. It is a huge fuck-you to all the die-hard fans who only like their harder stuff. Not saying you are one of them ofcourse, just saying.

I used the word generic, this doesn't mean they sound like other albums it means they carry a similar structure, make-up and share (or imo lack) the same creative ideas as a large number of other albums in the genus.

Countless? The only new genres I noticed SOAD integrating into their 2 new albums were about 10 seconds of a shit attempt at Reggae in 'Radio/Video' and Indie Rock which is strewn hideously all over the place. Aside from these 2 mindblowingly incredible advances, they added stupid harmonised choruses into almost every song which are uninventive and get annoying and samey. By the end of the 2nd album the miss-a-note americanised harmonising starts hurting the ears and sounds damn right embarrasing in comparison to tracks such as 'Psycho', 'Spiders', 'Peephole' or 'War?'.

Exactly, "other albums in the genus." Name me such an album.

You missed death metal, (Armenian) folk, pop, disco, powerballads, thrash, among others. There's also a lot of stuff I won't dare label other then 'typically SOAD'.

I like their softer songs too (almost none existent though) such as "Roulette" and "Spiders" (...it's kind of a gentle song..) but "Lonely Day" is really just bad and the lyrics are borderline Emo. I wish Serj had more say in the newest albums lyrically.

Let's just say they moved from an interesting alt metal-outfit to an overproduced pop/rock one with hints of metal. They're good at making catchy songs but nowadays with almost ABSOLUTE lack of substance. I don't care about them that much but will be around when they release their next album.

And please point me towards the death metal elements in SOAD's music plz

Let's adres this one at a time:

A: Mesmerize/Hypnotize are not pop/rock, there are certainly elements of both pop and rock in some of the songs, but not enough to justify that label.

B: Overproduced? I find Rick Rubin's production to be quite efficient. There's is no extensive overdubbing or anything that suggests overproduction.

C: None of the songs on Mesmerize/Hypnotize lack any substance. If anything, the album makes System's earlier efforts seem kind of brainless on the surface. Just because they upped the melodic tendencies does not make the songs have any less substance.

Listen to Attack or Dreaming.

Well it really is hard to tell, look at the first few posts in the thread. Hah but more importantly, how the hell did this get brought back from 5 years ago?

There's a little button called Search. Then once in the thread you were looking for, there's a little button called Post Reply. Et voila, the thread is back from the dead.
