TC Finalizer

Im just running my mix through the SPDIF connection and back into my DAW. I was wondering how other people were using their's as well.

SPDIF here too. I'll output each track to it in the mixing session for a while so I can hear how it affects my mix and make adjustments accordingly. But, when I make the bounce I won't include it yet, because during mastering I use a few other plug-ins on the master buss and I never have enough computer power to run all the track plug-ins AND mastering plug-ins...so after bouncing, I'll load all the stereo files into a new session and then use the Finalizer, along with a few more plugs.

Does a hardware device such as the TC finalizer work better then software counterparts? I'm not really sure what the finalizer does so this is a newb question, shot in the dark.

? lost.. i just mix my files down as a wav... shove them into T-racks (if in a rush) or that other program by steinburg.. and then mix that down again as a wav.. and then use 'windows audio converter' to make it a high quality mp3...

am i doing this a really long winded way? it takes me like half hour to mix down a song lol

its the bit i hate the most lol.

You serious? It takes me like 4 hours to 6 days to mix a song. In half and hour I barely have the time to 1. Turn on my comp, 2. Make some coffee, 3. Smoke a cigarette and 4. Prepare myself mentally to entering frustation, headache, ear-ache, hell, and getting the broken comp from the front yard and going through phases 2 and 3 again to duct tape the broken window.

Are you guys using the Finalizer Pro, 96 or Express?

Is the Express even worth looking into?

Im using the 96k, even though i only use 44.1. I havent used the express i would say if its anything like the 96k i would check it out.

Is the Express even worth looking into?

I have the Express, and I love it. I haven't tried a 96k, but I've always been under the impression that other than the higher available sampling rate, the main compression and limiting features are identical. Yes, the 96k has stereo widening, de-essing, a five band EQ (instead of three), and some other little perks as well, but I don't find myself missing them! I would recommend checking out the Express, especially since it's so much cheaper than the 96k. I got mine on eBay for about $490 I think.

What exactly does it do and what does it do better then programs?

You can read all about what it actually does on the TC Electronic website, and in my experience, it does it's job much better than the comparable plug-ins out there. The Finalizer is especially good at not killing your snare drum, and overall it actually sounds a little punchy, which I have never heard from things like the L1, L2, or that Massey mastering limiter.

I have always ran my 96K inputs and outputs through ADAT Optical with both my previous Nuendo/RME 9652 Audio card setup and now with Pro Tools HD 192 ADAT.

I have also used the XLR AES/EBU cable and it works just as well.

I also only run at 44.1.

I generally have my mix dialed and any plugs set on the Master output Bus in Pro Tools or Nuendo 2 and run it through the 96K Finalizer and back in to Pro Tools on a new Track. Then Bounce that to a WAV.

^ When running from your DAW into the finalizer and then back in to the DAW, do you always have to bring it in to a new track and then bounce?

Sorry, may be a dumb question. I've never used outboard gear for mixing or mastering. I've always been ITB.

*edit*
if I run SPDIF out into the Finalizer and then back in through SPDIF, how would I go about making sure the "finalized" is what's bounced to a wav?

I think im doing pretty much the same thing as MetalWorks, In Nuendo i will create a new stereo input/output and assign one of my Firepods s/pdif to those. Then i will create a audio track in my project that will be dedicated to recieving the Finalizers s/pdif output(i call it my mix buss), and have the output of that track routed to the main stereo buss. And then all i have to do is route all of my recorded tracks to the s/pdif out. Damn i know that is a horrible explaination but its the only way i can explain it at the moment lol

You have to create a audio track that has its input assinged the finalizers s/pdif then you just record the input of that audio track.
