Technical Death Metal

The Faceless are actually quite good technical death metal (though they are unfairly criticized for being a "Myspace band" and they do have hardcore moments), and Crimson Massacre are pretty much wanky, ANUS-ite bullshit.

Well I do have somewhat similar taste as you V, I highly disagree with your evaluation of CM. To me the band is like the second incarnation of old school At The Gates, only seemingly more chaotic initially.

Yeah I've always respected your taste pretty highly man. :)

However, I own the CM CD. It is NOT FOR ME. I will sell it to anyone for 7 bucks, definitely. I just do not like it at all. Given it plenty of chances. Vocals are weak, good epic sense of melody only peaks out here and there, drumming is incredibly nonstop (in a bad sense), etc...

Damn, I should of held off on buying it a few months ago, could've saved like 3 bucks.

I agree that the drumming could be better (it's probably the worst part of the album) and I have some other complaints as well but, those aside, I really do enjoy it.

Shut the FUCK UP...dude, seriously. If he wanted Swedeath, he'd ask for it. Stop being such a cockhat.

Haha...cockhat.

Actually, Necrophagist's first album is pretty decent. It wasn't COMPLETE wankery. There was some songwriting thought put into it.

I can't make up my mind about Necrophagist. I must admit I really do like those high pitched guitar runs and the solos but they get old pretty quickly. And I HATE the vocals. The worst stereotypical atonal death grunts.

The obvious touchstones of the genre:

Afflicted - Prodigal Sun

Atheist - Unquestionable Presence

Atrocity - Longing For Death

At the Gates - The Red in the Sky is Ours

Cadaver - ...In Pains

Creepmime - Shadows

Crimson Massacre - The Luster of Pandemonium

Deicide - Legion

Demilich - Nespithe

Disaffected - Vast

Gorguts - Obscura

Monstrosity - Imperial Doom

Seance - Saltrubbed Eyes

Wicked Innocence - Omnipotence

I don't understand TLoP at all and I've given it so many spins.:erk:
There is no feeling in the music. It sounds empty and robotic. I'm guessing that CM are praised for their ability to deviate greatly from the standard verse-chorus-verse structure, but the result appears as an incoherent barrage of riffs that I can't for the life of me untangle.

Death metal tends to train the ear to seek the encoded logic of the song in the rhythmic shaping of phrase, so music that works almost entirely through tonal allusion comes across as incomprehensible. Some of the same charges were leveled against both At the Gates and Gorguts, for much the same reason: the asymmetricality of their phrasing kept rhythm from providing the expected center of gravity.

If you want to understand Crimson Massacre, you need to focus on the repetition of certain tonal patterns, rather than trying to wrap your head around the rhythmic chaos.

Christ, here we go again...

You're not being entirely fair right now. He's just giving listening tips. In his own, perhaps, needlessly elaborate way, but thankfully I can understand him.
If only all of his posts were at least something along these lines and not silly variations of "are you even familiar with the concept of female"? repeated ad absurdum.
