the BEATLES thread

****not aimed at anyone in particular, just a musing from someone who enjoys a lot of "overrated" AND "underrated" music****

I think "overrated" is a really shit word, in the way it is often used.

It makes a dig at something/someone without providing any real argument, using the relative popularity of the subject to legitimise an opinion. Simultaneously it places anyone with an opposing opinion in to the category of mindless believer.

Often "overrated" is a synonym for "look at my glorious hipster cock"

I think it's safe to say no single person can define anything as "overrated", only history can judge the overall worthiness of influence and fame (or infamy). An individual is certainly within their capability to judge for themselves and express it as opinion, but individual opinion clearly does not a sound argument make.

I appreciate what they did, I really do, their songwriting is absolute genius, and without them we wouldn't have sabbath..... in which case chances are we wouldn't have had pantera, and that would be a very sad world indeed.
But I just really cannot get into The Beatles, no matter what, I could get along with them at first, but then my college course made us study Elanor Rigby for two years, and jesus wept.... Paul Mccartney/John Lennon's voices just piss me off instantaneously now.

Ps, George Harrisson is the most underrated Beatle, but also the best. Imo anyway.

Pps, in case anybody goes to point it out, i'm not being overly mehtulz and being all "hurr durr I hate them becuz dey have clean vocals", i'm a massive closet britney fan for christs sake :L

Ppps, EffigyForgotten, do you intentionally try and come across as a massive bellend in every post you make?

I'm astounded that after hundreds of years on the internet a lot of you actually still feed the EffigyForgotten ... ehm, I meant ... troll. Just ignore him.

On topic: I do like the Beatles a lot although I only listen to them while having breakfast on sunday or when I cook or sth. And I only own a "Best Of" which a friend bought me. The Beatles are mainly responsible for my own songs becoming shorter and shorter on my recent albums, because I love 2:30min tracks!

Off topic: I think the new Daft Punk is really boring.

Anyone not into the beatles needs to have a good hard listen to revolver. And skip yellow submarine while you're at it.

This!, a lot of people i know that don't like the beatles, is cause they just listened to their first albums (which aren't bad, but i get that these are more classic rock an roll tunes)

I also don't like all their stuff, and is easy that people despise the mellower side of beatles (for well, being excesively mellow), but there's so much to dive into.

I've played in bands with guys in their 40's/50's and almost all of them cite The Beatles' performance on The Ed Sullivan Show as what got them into playing music. That's pretty powerful stuff.

That was me for a long time. I'd associated them with twist and shout, yellow submarine, hey Jude and let it be, and always put off listening to them because I couldn't stand those songs.

And I still don't like those songs, but there's SO much more to them than that.
