The Bland Commercialisation?

I've noticed that the Grand Conjuration is consistently bagged here for being overly commercial and too simple. But I don't see anything wrong with the song. C'mon, it's over 10 mins long, has some really good riffs and some of Opeth's most effective polyrhythms. Granted its a bit repetitive, but it's not as though this isn't a pretty common aspect Opeth's music (eg. Dirge for November). Overall, I think this song is undeservingly ripped.

Yeah probably not one of their greatest, though it has it's moments. But surely not as bad as you'd think from the amount of criticism it recieves here.

For me it deserves the criticism because it was selected as the first opeth single and video when it doesn't properly represent opeth.

it grew on me a lot. I love the part after the solo, and when the main riff comes back and rocks the fuck out. the video is incredibly gay, but i don't think the band had any real input on it

lolll i'm with u dat da video is'nt so good but look to da good side dis is da first video to opeth & sumthing else dis song is 10min & dey reduced it to 5 min wat i wanna say dat if u look again to da album Ghost Reveries u'll find da dis was da best song to be made as a video as ghost of prediton,baying of da hounds,beneath the mire are a storry & if dey reduce even one minuite of dem it wont be good at all,Atonement & Hours of Wealth(instrumental),& isolation years dis is'nt da type of da musik dey always play
so dey dunn have except Reverie-Harlequin Forest & the Grand so dey preferd da grand as it's not a story or like dat to reduce wat dey want

TGC is decent on the album, but slays live. Dirge For November, however, crushes both versions.

It definitely beats Atonement. I don't think it's that bad. Though it may be repetitive, it is fairly dark and heavy and gives the album a bit of a boost.

I like it a lot. It's really heavy and kind of epic.

It's got lots of details and finesse too. Just listen at the downward glissandos in the bass guitar in the hard middle section (after 6'30'')! That is just so clever. It's such a great contrast to the hard hitting drums and guitar chords...!
