The -core thread

I'm someone who's opinion isn't tainted by too many years of harking back to hardcore's "glory days".

The past is dead and buried. It's all about new music, new scenes, new ideas, and most importantly, NOT LISTENING TO OLD PEOPLE WHEN THEY SAY NEW STUFF ISN'T HARDCORE!!

Well... since I can't claim to have run some shitty failure label... I guess not...

PS i never said i didnt like new hardcore bands but to me new hardcore bands are bands like The Oath, Spazz, Asshole Parade, etc etc...

New hXc bands that sound like old hXc bands fucking suck. All of them.

HARDCORE IS ABOUT PROGRESSION, NOT STAGNATION.

i agree with you 100%

out of interest where do you stand on the more melodic end of hardcore with stuff like Hot water Music and Leatherface, Small Brown Bike etc etc ??

"melodic" = "pop oriented", at least when we're talking about hardcore, at least nowadays. And "pop", to me, is the style's antithesis. It's the difference between "emo" and "pop punk". Whereas proper emo, which I like, is just a musical expression of a certain emotion that happens to lend itself to a less dissonant sound, most bands that wanna call themselves "emo" or "melodic hc" are just "pop punk" with a bit more overdrive, but they're still playing radio-friendly melodies.

antithesis ????? why ???????

so your saying that when hardcore progresses melodically its not "hardcore" but when it progresses ina metal way it is ??????

when it comes to pop punk and melodic hardcore.... I can tell you that there is a UNIVERSE of difference between truly independent bands like Screeching Weasel / Leatherface who are truly pop "PUNK" / Hardcore and mtv radio shit like Blink 182 / Sum41. You dont need to have a degree in music to tell the difference.... yet they both play melodic music.

what do you class as proper emo ???
to me its Fugazi, Rites of spring, Indian Summer etc...

It's a sort of strange crossover from Internet to Real-life. A parody/satire/some stupid shit. Meant to mimic an AOL screenname like "xMetalRoolzx".

NO ITS NOT !!

this is what straightedge hardcore bands use to distinguish themselves from regular hardcore bands in their logo, X = being the straightedge symbol of abstinence.

hence you get bands like XchampionX, XmouthpieceX, XchorusX, XLooking ForwardX etc etc
see this site for more info -

Teh Grimarse, are you actually into hardcore, or just a poser ?
