the i love off axis thread

Just realized that. micing a guitar eith the 57 is just wonderfull for me off axis. gets rid ofquf all that hiss fizz and tighten the mids like hell. i dont know why but on axis just sounds like a squashy sand paper. grainy and driveless. you all feel the same?

I keep meaning to mess with off axis stuff a bit more actually. Tried the whole fredman thing but I found it just added mud rather than thickness. I think using less of an angle and just going a little bit off axis rather than a full 45 degree's could yeild some good results.

I like off-axis with a 57, but I'm always finding myself having to blend it with a brighter tone to get that crispness out of it. I can't recall another mic that I liked an off-axis sound for guitars. The 421, SM7, C414 and e609 all sound best to me dead on, usually pointed near the edge of the dust cap.

I prefer off axis as well. But then again, I tend to chase a slightly different tone than most around here.
