The Metal Confessional Booth

I like a lot of mainstream stuff.

Andrew W.K. - Rock's only hope!
R.A.T.M.
Korn
Audioslave... kinda.
Mudvayne
System
The White Stripes
I think that's about it, really. And a ton of classic rock, if that counts - I know it does for some metal elitists. :)

What an interesting thread.

I gotta agree that Toxic is a great song, especially for Britney. I thought Slave was terrible, but Toxic is a great pop song and perfect for her. My wife disagrees and prefers Slave. :)

Regarding Outkast...oh man if I hear that heya song one more time I'm going to shoot myself or someone else.

OK...on to my own personal confessions....

American Idol - awesome show...awesome talent. Except John Stevens has got to go. I didn't like J Hudson as much as the others, but she shouldn't have gone down before John Stevens.

I really don't like pop music at all, my wife listens to z100 and I hate it, especially all the R&B type stuff that they play. Like Usher, or Bone thugs n harmony, they can all die. But I do appreciate excellent vocal talent...hey man Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken are awesome. Reuben has a great voice too, but I don't like his music much.

I hate Timberlake, he's a wannabee prince, but unlike prince he's not modest at all. He tries to be a hardass. I'll bet he cries himself a river every day because he's an idiot for losing Britney.

I have to say I do like a bit of rap, especially early 90's stuff...when Gangsta rap was more upbeat. Now everything is just real slow and has a ton of bass so the punk with the 89 civic with potato peeler on it can rattle.

I have early 90's cube, 2pac, Ice-T, and DMX's it's dark and hell is hot...I think he's losing it though.

That's my confession for now.

ok, if thats true, that how the FUCK can you explain that dumb fucking retarded chinese guy who cant sing worth SHIT get signed to a record label and become famous???!?!? it just proves, that, as a whole nation, people from the US are flat out stupid..Bush was one thing, but that just really hits the nail right on the head..yes, his 15 min of "fame" is short lived, but it should never have happened in the first place.

Linkin Park-I really love techno mixed into rock/metal. They pull it off on quite a few songs.

Michael Jackson-The king of pop.

Prince-Good guitar player and great song writer. I dig his stuff, new single is pretty bad though.

The Ramones-Funny how I could like something so stripped down and basic, even when 90% of the music I listen to is prog. Love the extremes

Evanescence *dodges beer bottles*
You know Amy Lee was supposed to sing on the new Ayreon album? Arjen approached her about it but she couldn't commit due to some other things.

Do you know how much his contract was for? $25,000. wow....that's crap man. He knows full well that he's just being laughed at by everyone around the world, not just the US. In my opinion, even though the contract is shit, he is a smart business man. Look, he made a fool of himself and everyone loves to laugh at him. He is going to take all he can from it. I'll bet he's one of the few "fucking retarded chinese" people getting tons of action now too.
Anyway, did he make it past that audition? No...so what the fuck is your problem?

I was talking about the finalists. The final 12 out of 70,000. If you can do better, why not just do it and make some goddamn money. And you know what else, I'm proud of my commander and chief too. I spent most of the first year of my marriage away from my wife, serving the us military under GW Bush, and I have no regrets. Why come here if you're going to start flaming people?

View the thread topic, this is a confessional. The priest does not ridicule you for your opinions here.

You owe me $6.25 for feeding you, plus 15% gratuity.

Holy shit dude, you just got fucking owned. I will agree that American Idol makes me wanna slit my wrists. I mean, there's a ton of talent out there, in garages all over the country, but some pretty boy fag wins a beauty contest voted on by the MTV zombies, and HE gets a record deal.

In closing, G-dub is the man. If you don't agree, you can go starve in China ya commie/hippie scum. Wow, that sounded angry. Sorry, just kiddin yall.

Hey, not directed at any one person, but let's not get into the political stuff... that's not what we are about here. as for american idol, it's alright. never watched the show, but the talent that comes out of there is definitely real in many cases... except clay. that guy is fucking loony as all hell. and that stalker song is creepy (don't tell me invisible isn't a stalker song, because it fucking is).

I think everyone needs to lighten the fuck up. by everyone, i'm singling out a specific person but not mentioning names. Dude, you don't like anything non-metal and non-shredding. that's fine, but this isn't the thread you should be in bro. Take your shit-talking elsewhere.

As for timberlake, i never said he doesn't have a bad attitude, he does have talent though. His voice is all i can appreciate there. As for brittney, she actually has some good songs in addition to being possibly the only pop-female that has a voice i like (fuck jessica simpson and mandy moore and xtina agulara).

my problem is the fact that it happened at all, doesnt matter how much he got paid, its the fact that it happened. so much awesome talent out there thats never seen or heard, yet some guy who has no talent at all gets signed.

I admit to liking Evanescence right now. I USED to like Green Day, Ace of Bass (way back in the day), Offspring, the Foofighters, Collective Soul (which i still like), Deftones (can't stand em anymore), i still really like Metallica but i would never feel bad about that, and WAYYYY back in the day one of my first cd's to ever get....the Top Gun soundtrack...hey, we go through our phases.

I agree that there is so much awesome talent out there that will never get to the public. It is a shame, but that's why there are opportunities underground.

But the label that is giving him a contract is just using him to make money. People are going to buy it and laugh at it. And he'll make some money too. Not everyone is signed because of talent. If they can entertain people enough to buy, then they will get signed. It's the way the world works, not just the US.

The bash on Americans is what I really didn't like about your first post.

Whether American or otherwise, the nature of a pop idol is that the music is going to be just the same old thing, over and over and over again. Recycled with a new label on the can. Most people either don't have the smarts or don't have the motivation to take the time and use the energy to appreciate the best music, so they get the mediocrity that is fed to them by the mainstream. (I'm not being elitist or anything. It's like, how can you get someone to understand calculus when they can barely get basic algebra? Algebra is fine, but there's a wider, deeper world of math out there. There's a learning process.)

American Idol isn't trying to find the greatest singers, and when they get signed, the companies aren't going to find them the greatest songs. They can package mediocrity and sell it to people who are at that level of music appreciation. I think it's unfortunate that they miss the deeper and more meaningful experiences of better, more powerful music, but that's not what they want. Mainstream music has to aim for the lowest common denominator, or it will fail. It has to be mediocre or it won't sell. (Obviously there are exceptions, but the important point is that they are exceptions.)

That's why these are guilty pleasures. We should know better, but we like them anyway, often for unexplicable reasons. Or maybe it's just that the singer is hot. (Though there are of course some that we are uncomfortable with just because they are so far out of our usual genre, and it seems so unlike us. Like me and Tom Jones. I find it hard to reconcile myself to the fact that I like a singer who has women throwing underwear at him and screaming hysterically. And my mom was one of them! :ill:

Either way, we have the windows of the car down when we're blasting out King of Terrors, but we roll them up and pretend we're headbanging while in reality we're listening to some over-painted, surgery-enhanced teenage girl squeak along to some bouncy, sugary ditty. Guilty as charged!:p

CD's I owned before I had a good taste in music:

Greenday - all of them
Alanis Morsiette - her first one  I am serious
Presidents of the United States of America
Smashing Pumpkins - Melancholy of course
Nirvana - The one with the baby on it
Metallica - load and reload
Korn - Follow the leader
Rammstein - the one with du haust on it
Rob Zombie
Static X

Just take a look at my sig and see how I evolved. :p

Omg, I owned like just about all of those too. Hahaha. And "the one with the baby on it" is Nevermind. It's their breakthrough, with Smells Like Teen Spirit on it. Roots baby, know em.

Yeah, this is not the metal elitist in me talking at all, but Nevermind, and specifically smells like teen spirit sucked. Those were really god-awful songs. Dave grohl is a genius though. Oh, add Foo Fighters to my list, especially the colour and the shape album... that one ruled. still does in fact. i was jammin' to that shortly after the probot disc came out, which is a killer album, but not a guilty pleasure by any means (not with the way cronos sounds!)
