If you were born in the USA but your primary ancestors originate from a certain place you would use this. If you emigrate to the USA from Egypt your an Egyptian immigrant, that is to say you are Egyptian. If you were born in the USA and your ancestors are primarily Egyptian you may call yourself an Egyptian American.
This is really just a matter of people being lazy and simple minded. On the other hand most Europeans are called white as an easy way to group them together instead of recognizing their particular ethnicity, it is stupid. Meanwhile people from Asia are correctly referred to as Asian, or Japanese, Chinese etc... because the term "yellow" has been recognized as being used only by ignorant people.
And what are you basing this on other than your bigoted perspective perhaps?
Me, bigoted? Not really. I do stand corrected, using the term "most", since that denotes that American blacks are "mostly" white", which they are not, as shown by Steve Sailer's research:
In contrast, African-Americans are much more racially mixed than European-Americans. Yet, Shriver's study shows that they are less European that was previously believed.
Earlier, cruder studies, done before direct genetic testing was feasible, suggested that African-Americans were 25 or even 30 percent white. Shriver's project is not complete, but with data from 25 sites already in, he is coming up with 17-18 percent white ancestry among African-Americans. That's the equivalent of 106 of those 128 of your ancestors from seven generations ago having been Africans and 22 Europeans.
According to Shriver, only about 10 percent of African-Americans are over 50 percent white.

However, this research does show that most African Americans have some non-African ancestry. And yes, I realize that this is all a moot point, since every single homo sapien's mitochondrial DNA is African in origin.
