The New Iced Earth has possibly the worst lyrics ever

I'm wondering... if IE's new album had been called "Gettysburg" and contained the "one" song, would everyone be saying it's their best album ever? Cause general consensus so far is most people can't stand the majority of the first cd, but love the second

Well, no, even then it wouldnt be as good as IEs best, but its 40 minutes of not bad to great stuff and the rest is filler or worse IMO :)

As a former lecturer of mine once said about literary theory, "it's all bollocks!"

If I'd known who IE were back in the dim dark days of 1994, I'd have said that he might as well have been talking about The Glorious Burden.

I didn't and he wasn't, but the argument still stands. TGB is nothing I haven't heard done before (or better) on any of the previous albums. Hopefully Jon will come to his senses in the years ahead and allow some of the other members to contribute ideas as well. If this cheese fest is anything to go by, he sure as hell can't carry the band on his own anymore.

Alive In Athens, however, is a great listen and well worth the $60 I paid for the 3 disc version. I just wish they'd included Colours and the intro to When The Night Falls.

I predict Jon will write the Set album next now that he has Ripper on vocals and it will be absolutely amazing. You heard it here first.

I dont think Gettysburg is that bad Wrathy :) Its not IEs best, but it has its moments :headbang:

Children Of Bodom are supposed to be really awesome live as well Ralphe, you are going to have an awesome night at that show :)

Yes but Horror Show is pretty much IEs heaviest album, the album as a whole is really dark and not fruity and power metally
I couldn't agree less. Horror Show is 100% power-metal to me. :erk:

Then you are completely wrong Sydo :) Besides maybe the chorus in Dracula (and thats just a maybe) there is no power metal to speak of!

I don't get the power-metal vibe listening to this one at all. Besides the chorus to The Reckoning, it sounds completely non-cheesy to me.
The chorus of Devil To Pay and Hold At All Cost are very monotonous however (MATT! ).

Spawn, you forgot The Reckoning. I know you don't like the chorus, but it is an awesome vicious song. :headbang:

I think Horror Show has somewhat of a powermetallish vibe, but it isn't really powermetally at all (except Dracula, my least favourite track). The Glorious Burden is kinda the opposite, it has some very powermetally bits, but doesn't really have the vibe during the parts that aren't power metally.

I think Gettysburg is amazing and is one of Jon's best works. Up there with Dante's Inferno and The Phantom Opera Ghost, and better than both the previous trilogies! (as good as The Coming Curse is). I don't really see how it can be considered boring. If it was short it wouldn't have as much impact and the material covered would come across very poorly. I think Jon did a TOP job on it. All the other material is questionable about how he handled things even if I do like them, but Gettysburg is the shit IMO. As for the album being full of things we have seen before, so freakin what? Not many bands that most people here listen to come up with something completely new on their 7th studio album. Jon has been recycling stuff since the bands debut, but it is all good. There is some newer stuff in there anyway, well in Gettysburg at least. And some of Ripper's vocal techniques bring something new to the table, love it or hate it.

In other Iced Earth news, I made an Iced Earth mp3 cd for the car today, and gave Alive In Athens a listen as this thread made me realise how long it have been since I listened to it, and I must say, I really did forget how awesome Barlow is/was. SOO much range it isn't funny, his bottom end stuff sounds SOO much better live. What presence. Totally reminded me why he is one of my favourite vocalists. :kickass:

Ralphe, I am soo fucking jealous, I would love to see that gig. Probably second on my list of gigs I want to see most, behind Judas Priiiiiieeeesssst!!!!! :headbang:
