as I am seeing, the LA retro thrash scene is getting many followers, yet I don't see nothing much new and the bands seem a bit plain, was it like this in the 80's and then one band was different and succeeded or is this the limit of growth for this scene? I am asking as my band's demo is being formed and I don't want to fall into such plainness if we don't develop our style further although other band members are saying just put anything out now.

Well I can't comment on the LA scene, but I can give you my personal advice about releasing your own music. I feel that you shouldn't release something if you aren't 100% supportive of it. It's your music, man, I think that if it were something that truly reflects you, you would not doubt it.

But then again, I could just be overanalyzing the whole situation:u-huh:

Which bands compose this scene? Never heard of a retro LA thrash scene.

In anycase retro thrash will be welcomed, my #3 album of the year is by Abandoned, the debut of a German band that plays thrash by-the-book, vocals are hard but cleaner than Kreator, Destruction or Sodom, and the thrash is furious, fast and extremely well played. Think Slayer mixed with Testament and having the best of both bands.

Seeing as the "retro thrash" or "fashionthrash" revival is the new trend, the likelihood of very much originality and innovation is sparse, so you either have to take it for what it is (a retread of everything that's been done before), or ignore it.

Maybe I'm not looking for originality but for music that appeals me for being exactly like the music I used to listen to 20 years ago.

On the other hand sometimes I love something fresh but I'm not going to look for it on a certain scene (unless is the never-done-before-scene  )

Yeah, I mean its decent thrash, and after outplaying the originals, some new matl. is needed, nothing new, just keeping tradition alive and cheap live shows as well, just wanted to see what you all thought of it, being essentially old school in a way. The thing is I would hope for a band to come out of these, as to emerge with an own identity, then again I have been whining for such energy in songs for a long time. The fashion is cool, because it was being lost as well before, plus it makes one feel like thrashing!

Merciless Death sounds pretty good. A lot like Dark Angel but with cleaner vocals which in my book spells HELL YEAH.

Thanks for the tip on them, gonn add them.

What in the name of all that is unholy is "Fashionthrash???" Shit, I know I can't keep up with all these sub-sub genres, but..."Fashionthrash?" What could that be...Kate Moss banging out some Infernal Overkill?

hahah, the last i heard Melissa Tzuka or whatever her name is (ex Neighbours star, 90's pop singer and recently returned with a new single, likes to headbang to Metallica, so yeah, lets hear it for fashionthrash!:Puke:

Shit, maybe that was a bit harsh. Take 2 with a somewhat positive angle: its great to see the young taking an interest in thras because it rules. So hoorah for those who wish to keep thrashing alive, goodluck!

Unfortunately most of the ideas are due to be repeated but obstacles such as those hasnt stopped bands like Jet or Wolfmother, so lets see what comes our way....

" Thrash is now "retro," and is the new trend. It's cool to be a "thrasher" now, so a lot of people are just dressing the part. Essentially, posers, but more specifically Thrash posers. There is apparently an epidemic of them in Toronto.
if only Paul Baloff were around, he'd teach them a lesson in violence they wont soon forget!

"Fashionthrash" is a derogatory term to refer to modern day scenesters who sport band shirts, acid washed jeans, white sneakers, and patch vests of bands that they've never heard of. Coincidence or not? :D

@Wyv : Abandonned are killer! I saw them at the very end of a festival in Germany, after the headliner had played, almost everybody was exhausted or drunk (well, that's Germany :D) and nobody expected that band but they truly impressed the crowd (and myself!).

There allways has been, and their allways will be posers in any scene. Warbringer, Fuled By Fire, Hirax... all are 100% non posers, and they are doing an awsome job trying to keep the fire buring down in so-cal. The thrash scene down their is growing, its getting big, and those bands fucking kick ass. They are the sole reason for thrash scene building back up in LA.

Say what you want about them just doing the 80's stuff all over again, at least they are doing somthing...

Its happening in the Bay Area too. We just got a late start, but were working on getting back to where it was.

Support the Bay Area Thrash Scene:

They came back? I got the 'Above The Ashes' album on my computer, GREAT Thrash.

Damn, I wish we had ANY kind of Thrash scene around here. The scene seems to be all "Hardcore" and Emo. I'm in New York, and rarely come across an Anthrax or Overkill or Nuclear Assault fan, let alone anything obscure like Crumbsuckers or Carnivore.

I like the fact thrash is getting bigger in the US.

There are a few bands in Europe still mixing thrash and powermetal like Brainstorm Tad Morose etc. but there are really only a few high quality bands like that I have been exposed to. If the scene catches on in the states, maybe we will get more newer bands in the melodic thrash power/thrash style that I dig.

have you also noticed how new looking the 1990 tour shirts they are wearing look....

Ha ha ha. I have an Yngwie Odyssee shirt that is so old, you can see through it.

Anyway.... you are living proof thrash has never died in the first place. While I don't know if I would label your band as a "thrash" band, the influence is definitely there.
