reading the reviews, it seems as thought the latest effect from maiden is not that good - has anyone heard it ? should it have been mastered ? should maiden use another producer to assist with song writing ?

I feel mastering may help a bad mix, but it wont make a shit song good. Unless we are now in a world where the presentation is more important thyan the material it is made from?

Personally I've only heard the benjamin song and I found it boring, and I used to really dig maiden - what about the new slayer album though - Baritones and in B! cant wait to check them out live in november in london - SLAyer!

As stated before, I've hated Maiden for the past 15 years and I like this CD.

I think it sounds great without mastering. Plus, the bass sound is amazing.

Me too, it has a very organic feel to it, I can't see why the bashing. The last thing I really liked by them was Seventh Son, but this record is just great. Actually, some of the songs are plain awesome, others are very good still. And IF there's a weak link here it surely isn't the sound itself, but Bruce trying too hard to sing in high pitch - it's not bad enough to ruin anything though, just an occasional "ACK!" as far as I'm concerned.

And the end of the day what is the primary purpose of mastering a CD? Not mastering for any other application but just for CD. In my understanding so it can have consistant sonic qualities in many different situations, and commercially have more impact than it's competitors when in comparison.

I'm guessing Maiden have quite a captive audience and could care less about competing on radio or tv with anyone else. An album for fans that will love it as long as the songs are good. The best tool for making something louder is your hand and most maiden fans will turn that shit up if they want it so.          :kickass: :Puke:

couldn't have said it better myself moose....

I think the guitars could have been a little louder, other than that, I think the album sounds pretty sweet (mastered or not)

I love the album. Every song is great, but it's one of those albums you have to listen through a few times before you really get it, just like their last two albums. I think it sounds fine without mastering. For The Greater Good Of God and The Pilgrim are my two favorite songs, but I really like all of them.

if you go to the AOL music website and click on "Listening Party" under one of the tabs... the new IRON MAIDEN is available for you to stream the whole CD. Then you can decide for yourself if it is good.

IMO: I think it's better than "Dance of Death" but not quite as good as "Brave New World"... there... my 2 bits.

I dig it as well. But then, I'm a Maiden fanboy. But I do think it's the best of the reunion albums, although it is a bit of a grower.
Does the production seem inconsistent to anyone else? Some songs sound great, and others sound flatter. Listen to the snare in particular.
Also, the vocals really get lost at times, and that bugs me.

agree with you on the consistancy from song to song for sure. i personally think for three guitars in the band, the guitars are hardly there except for the leads. i also think the songs are really good, but the mixes lack energy and excitement. i would like to hear what the album would sound like mixed by one of the top metal mix engineers(andy, colin, james, zuess, etc.), but that aint gonna happen unfortunatley.
