The Next Chapter: Bodom After Midnight

Metal Hammer: Every Children Of Bodom album ranked from worst to best

10) Blooddrunk (2008)
Following Hate Crew Deathroll and Are You Dead Yet?, Blooddrunk was the final entry in Bodom’s “all-out extreme metal” trilogy. It’s also the nadir of that era. The riffs are archetypical thrash metal, the solos feel intricate yet devoid of pizazz, and the hooks aren’t strong enough to catch a goldfish. A flicker of the Bodom of old sneaks through in Tie My Rope’s bombastic keyboard line, but this is a far cry from the trend-bucking ingenuity they flaunted at the turn of the millennium.

9) I Worship Chaos (2015)
The follow-up to 2013’s Halo Of Blood has the opposite energy of its predecessor. That’s not to say it doesn’t have the guitar showmanship and theatrical keys; rather, it follows a revitalising album with songs that sound like Bodom being Bodom in their sleep. Despite the speed metal verve of Widdershins, the likes of Morrigan and I Hurt are the sound of musicians tiredly retreading familiar territory. There’s nothing bad per se, but there’s nothing mind blowing either.

8) Relentless, Reckless, Forever (2011)
Alexi ranked his band’s seventh album as their worst, but that’s a harsh assessment. It’s at least a step up from Blooddrunk, reintegrating quirks that had been forgotten since the Hate Crew Deathroll days. The duelling guitar and keyboard solos are back, even if neither sound as jubilant as they did during Hatebreeder and Follow The Reaper. Some classic rock rhythm work makes Roundtrip To Hell And Back infectious, too. Although not Bodom’s mightiest moment, Relentless, Reckless, Forever proved a return to form.

7) Hexed (2019)
Bodom’s final chapter sometimes slips into the apathy that defines I Worship Chaos, with songs like Kick In A Spleen feeling like a band painting by numbers. However, plenty of other entries lift themselves above the doldrums. This Road opens with galloping guitars and later explodes with keyboard solos. Glass Houses busts out some Van Halen tapping while Soon Departed is more plodding hard rocker than death metal smasher. Overall, this one’s the most middle-of-the-road Bodom album money can buy.

6) Are You Dead Yet? (2005)
Are You Dead Yet? doubled down on the aggro of predecessor Hate Crew Deathroll. This time, it downplayed not just the keyboards, but also Alexi’s athletic guitar style, changing lanes into more mid-tempo groove metal chugging. Even though it was Bodom’s least characterful album when it came out, it houses some of their simplest and most memorable choruses. Anyone who puts on Living Deadbeat should prepare to have the line “like the living dead, well never die!” wedged into their brain forever.

5) Something Wild (1997)
Bodom were still perfecting their soundscape when they released their debut album in 1997. The pieces were all there – neoclassical licks, power metal keyboard solos and the odd stomping rock ’n’ roll drum beat – but also fighting for space was obvious Dissection and melodeath worship. Nonetheless, Something Wild offers some genuine highlights. Lake Bodom and Deadnight Warrior proved triumphant enough to become setlist regulars, and Touch Like Angel Of Death is an extravaganza of light-speed guitar soloing.

4) Halo Of Blood (2013)
Bodom’s eighth album is their late-game masterpiece. Picking up where Relentless, Reckless, Forever left off, it both revisits their earlier oeuvre and makes sense of that awkward thrash era. Damaged Beyond Repair ascends from open-string chugs to a victorious harmony and the title track is the Finns’ most blackened serving since Something Wild. Meanwhile, Dead Mans Hand On You returns Janne’s keyboards to the limelight. It’s like someone cherrypicked the best of every prior Bodom album and tossed it into a blender.

3) Hate Crew Deathroll (2003)
After Follow The Reaper perfected Bodom’s extreme neoclassical metal, the quintet veered sideways. The six strings are king on Hate Crew Deathroll, relegating Janne to a backing role that only takes the lead for the odd intro and solo. Although some decried the shift, the songwriting lost none of its exhilaration. Sixpounder bludgeons with the furthest reaches of Alexi’s fretboard, Triple Corpse Hammerblow has an A-grade chorus and Angels Dont Kill marches authoritatively with its groove metal drum work.

2) Hatebreeder (1999)
Bodom could have gone one of two ways after Something Wild: either taming their idiosyncrasies to become more at home in Scandinavia’s black metal and melodeath scenes, or amplifying their flamboyance. Thank God, then, that Hatebreeder did the latter, escaping contemporary trappings to inject Randy Rhoads- and Ritchie Blackmore-like virtuosity into extreme metal. Music so blistering had never embraced playing so neoclassical before, and Alexi’s guitar mastery on Silent Night, Bodom Night and Towards Dead End was a breath of fresh air.

1) Follow The Reaper (2000)
Follow The Reaper fucking nails it. Everything anyone could ever want from a ludicrous extreme metal album is lobbed out over nine songs and 38 minutes. Alexi’s neoclassical guitars and Janne’s keyboards are in perfect sync, each player melodic, technical and seamlessly segueing into the other. Also, the hooks, be they those cries of “Bodom… after midnight!” or the violin stabs that ignite Hate Me!, are all top-notch. Extreme metal may present itself as evil, but this masterstroke zeroed in on the silliness at its heart and cranked it up to eleven for the world to adore.

She’s just bitter because she can’t milk any more money from Alexi and she’s been exposed. Let’s not give her the attention she so desperately seeks. She’s fading into nothingness where she came from and every once in a while she makes comments like these trying to stay relevant. She’s pathetic and sick. I would feel sorry for her but if it wasn’t for her Alexi would most likely be still alive, at least have a few more good years.
Totally agree

I mostly agree but i think hexed should be much higher actually for me above halo, the vibe, the hooks it was all there and this critic spoke highly about the weakest song on the album. Soon departed is a masterpiece and kick in the spleen is awesome.
definitely agree about blooddrunk being their worst and chaos being lazy. still like them though.

" definitely agree about blooddrunk being their worst "
I disagree. Bloddrunk has some good songs for me... Banned from Heaven, Bloddrunk, Tie my Rope, Hellhounds, One day you will cry, Smile pretty for the devil, Roadkill Morning... I like these songs. But IWC... Cruel Summer, Suicide Bomber, maybe My Bodom.... and that's it. So IWC 10, RRF 9, Bloddrunk ~8 for me. : ) Sure, it's subjective.

Really difficult to put things in order, but IWC is definitely the worst COB album if you ask me. The only song from it that I listen to is All for Nothing.

But i do like every one of their albums, they all have good songs on them. even my least favorite ones, sometimes ill go back and listen to them and stlll think dam what good riff or solo or chorus or interlude etc

I probably have the most unpopular ranking, but in my opinion:
1 - Hate Crew Deathroll (I mean... Come on! Triple Corpse Hammerblow? You're better off dead? Lil red ridin' hood?).
2 - Hexed (Apart from the singles, some of my all time favourite Bodom songs).
3 - Relentless Reckless Forever (Not my Funeral? Shovel Knockout? Roundtrip to Hell and back? UGLY!!!!!?).
4 - Something Wild. (The Nail & In the Shadows are just some of the greatest songs ever written)
5 - Hatebreeder.
6 - Halo of Blood.
7 - Follow the Reaper.
8 - Are you dead Yet?
9 - I Worship Chaos.
10 - Blooddrunk.

FTR 7th? Heresy! :D

My list would probably be something along the lines of...:

1. Follow the Reaper

2. Hate Crew Deathroll

3. Hatebreeder

4. Halo of Blood

5. Are You Dead Yet (Living Dead Beat and Punch Me I Bleed are both epic)

6. Hexed (Soon Departed has an amazing chorus. The rest of the album is pretty good too)

7. Relentless Reckless Forever (Don't like the sound / production on this one, but the songs are pretty good, especially Shovel Knockout and the chorus to Not My Funeral)

8. Blooddrunk (I like most of the album. Roadkill Morning and LoBodomy are songs I never listen to, but the rest of the album is okay. I like the sounds here better than on RRF)

9. Something Wild (Well... :D The album has some great parts here and there, like the intro to Lake Bodom, that one melody in Deadnight Warrior, and the interlude from In the Shadows, but overall I listen to it very little)

10. I Worship Chaos (I just don't like this album at all. All for Nothing is great and has an amazing chorus, but that's more or less the only song I don't skip. Prayer for the Afflicted has good melodies but it's too slow)

1. Hatebreeder, easily
1.5 Tokyo Warhearts :kickass:
2. Follow The Reaper / Something Wild / Hate Crew Deathroll - all equally strong in my book
3. Blooddrunk
4. Are You Dead Yet?
5. RRF / HOB
6. IWC / Hexed

Blooddrunk does sound like absolute shit, way overcompressed, one of the victims of the loudness war. The songwriting, on the other hand, is phenomenal

Definitely not an easy list to do

1. Are You Dead Yet? - Finally less keys and more br00tality!
2. Hate Crew Deathroll - Has got to be among the best produced albums in metal
3. Follow the Reaper - Hate the keys, but the songs are fantastic
4. Hatebreeder - How great would this be with re-recorded vocals
5. I Worship Chaos - Not sure what folks have against it (is that it's the least Bodom sounding?) but it's got some great songs.
6. Halo of Blood - Some songs just rub me the wrong way
7. Hexed - COB light. Love Say Never Look Back though
8. Blooddrunk - Production is off and gets in the way of the music. Banned From Heaven is glorious.
9. Something Wild - nothing against the great songwriting but the production hasn't aged well at all
10. Relentless Reckless Forever - In itself it's pretty good, production is strong, but what is it about this album that is lacking?

1. Halo of Blood - It's like Follow the Reaper mixed with the modern Bodom sound. This was my favorite in 2013 and still is to this day.
2. Follow the Reaper - The quintessential Bodom record, I do prefer most newer albums but this album is phenomenal in every way.
3. Relentless Reckless Forever - Used to hate the production, now I don't mind it. Very progressive riffs on songs like NMF, PMS, CotN, Ugly. Most underrated Bodom album.
4. Blooddrunk - Dark, thrashy, don't mind the production as some other people do.
5. Hate Crew Deathroll - Definition of all killer, no filler. Classic after classic.
6. Are You Dead Yet? - New-era Bodom sound. Songs like IYWP...PFW, NIL, TL&S remain some of my favorites to this day.
7. Hexed - This would have been top 3 when it came out in 2019 but it fell quite a bit. Glass Houses, Relapse and Soon Departed are killer though.
8. Hatebreeder - Hate ranking this so low since there really isn't a low point on the album. I just prefer AYDY era and on I guess.
9. I Worship Chaos - Suicide Bomber and Widdershins are two of my favorite Bodom tracks but a lot of stuff on this album is pretty mediocre.
10. Something Wild - I just don't connect with this one as much as others. Used to love it back in the day but rarely listen to it the whole way through now.

Okay, I guess we’re doing lists for lack of better.
I didn’t connect well with hat, beanie or bandana era Alexi. I got the first 3 albums as mp3s from a friend that said this might be right up your alley, and boy was he right. It was just a few months before HCDR released.
1. Hatebreeder
2. HCDR
3. FTR
4. SW
5. Hexed
6. AYDY
7. HoB
8. IWC
9. RRF
10. Blooddrunk

Unsure of Something Wild. It’s a weird album. Has immortal classics, but also weird sounds. Has the neo classical thing going, but also the worst vocals.

I listen to Tokyo Warhearts in its entirety at least once a week, so that is really my GOAT. It’s just soo good. When I first heard it, I thought whoever played would be older and more experienced to be able to play at this level, but they were 20 year old kids at the time.

Allright, here it goes!

1. Hatebreeder. It took a while to get used to the vocals as I was still quite new to metal, and AYDY was the first album I bought. But once I got used to it I can't let it go, it's just such a masterpiece.
2. Follow the Reaper. I think Kissing the Shadows might be enough to put this album at no.2.
3. AYDY. Always loved this album, might be a bit biased since it was the first one I bought. Punch Me I Bleed is one of my favorite songs ever.
4. Something Wild. How can someone release such an album at that age? Incredible.
5. HCDR.
6. HoB.
7. IWC. All for Nothing is amazing, but for me very hard to listen to since he passed away. The dueling soloes makes me choke up.
8. Hexed.
9. RRF.
10. Blooddrunk. Banned from heaven is amazing.

And like previous poster said, Tokyo Warhearts might be the GOAT, simply outstanding!

I will never understand why every magazine ranks Blooddrunk as the worst Bodom Album. Even Alexi himself ranked it somewhere in the middle ground. I think Hellhounds on my Trail is my most listened Bodom song ever at this point. Its just pure aggressive energy and a punch in your face.
I also generally liked the more .... electronic? sound of the keyboards. I always wished they would do another album in that sound style.

My ranking:

1. Hate Crew Deathroll
I dont need to say much I think. Its probably the best produced Bodom album and in general one of the best produced metal albums ever. The whole tracklist is one classic after another. It was also the first Bodom album i ever listened to. I still remember how I was amazed and blown away by the opening of Needled 24/7. Just amazing.

2. Hexed
This album has a great atmosphere and is on the same level as HCDR when it comes to production and sound imho. The songs were great and most importantly: Alexi did the best vocal work in his career on this one. Absolutely amazing. Especially after Halo and IWC where a little dissapointing in that regard for me. But I will come to that later.

3. Follow the Reaper
The first album where Alexis vocal style changed from the Hatebreeder style. Which is good since Im not a big fan of the vocals on the first two albums. This one here is just as amazing as Hatecrew Deathroll. The productuon is a little weaker though. Still, an absolute masterpiece like HCDR and Hexed.

4. Are You Dead Yet
Probably the most mainstreamish Bodom Album. But I dont mind that. Its just a great Album with iconic songs and it still sounds like Bodom. Other Bands completely betray their identity when they go mainstream. But Bodom didnt.

5. Blooddrunk
As I said I really love this one. In earlier rankings I did, it used to be at place 4. But I need to admit that AYDY has just more big hits and classics on it. Still, Hellhounds, Blooddrunk, Smile Pretty, Rope, Heaven and Roadkill are fantastic songs. This is my go to album whenever Im pissed of. Thats probably the reason why Hellhounds is my most listened Bodom song at this point. The pure aggression of this album is just amazing in combination with the melodies (second half of smile for example). It blows my mind how you can rank this as the worst.

6. Relentless Reckless Forever
Great sound, the first half is very strong. Not my Funeral alone would be worht purchasing this album. Such a killer song and an amazing opener. I also really love the more rhythmic songs like Pussyfoot. The second half of songs is a little weaker but its still an enjoayable listening experience. This was also the last album before another shift in Alexis Vocal style happened (to the worse unfortunately).

7. Hatebreeder
Most people probably rank this higher. The reason why its only at rank 7 for me is the vocal style. As I said Im not the biggest fan of the style in the first two albums. Still the songs are absolutely amazing and I obviously got used to the vocals over time. But I cant deny: I always wished they would re-record this one. Or atleast re-record the vocals.

8. I Worship Chaos
After Halo of Blood was a huge dissapointment for me, this one was a step in the right direction. But still not as great as everything up to RRF. While the whole sound was a lot better than on Halo and didnt sound so boring, the vocals still sounded a little forced and where also low pitched (at least it sounds like it to me). I always loved the raw unedited style of Alexis vocals. So that was still quite a letdown. Also the songs themself werent the best they ever did. Widdershins, My Bodom and All for Nothing are great. Other songs have some nice parts like the melody in I Hurt. But you often feel like there is something missing to the usual Bodom greatness. It lacks the typical energy I think. Its not a bad album, but its definitly not the one I would recommand to get into Bodom. Im really glad that they stepped up their game again and ended their career with an absolute Killer album like Hexed and not this one.

9. Something Wild
Im gonna be honest: I barely listened to this one at all. I also dont think its that much of an enjoyable listening experience. Its more like a curiosity and intersting thing to see and understand how the band developed their style. IIRC even Alexi himself ranked it at the second last spot or so. People who were fans since day one will rank this probably a lot higher but I just dont have that connection to it. It just didnt age that well. Maybe a re-record would have been nice for this one.

10. Halo of Blood
This is it. The only "bad" Album to me. Ironically, for many people this was a return to form and its often ranked in the top 3. But then again most people hate Blooddrunk, which I love. But why is this the worst to me? The songs on their own arent even that bad. They are definitly better than most on IWC. No, the problem is the whole sound and production of this album. It sounds so fucking bland and boring to me. The instruments (drums) are lacking a punch, the keyboard is horribly mixed into the songs outside of the solos. All these atmospheric backing sounds and melodies and drum support sounds (those sounds that are used in synch with the drums, you know what I mean) of the keyboard sound like the band would play in one room but Janne would stand in a different room on his own. Its so silent, far away and powerless in the mix except for the solos... just horrible.
And the biggest problem: The vocals. Alexi said in an interview back then, that this was the first album where he payed more attention to the vocals. On earlier albums, he wrote and recorded them in like two days or so. Quick and dirty. And thats what I loved about them. They just sounded so aggressive and had this zero fucks given attitude. It was such a nice contrast to the instrumental perfection. On this album he wrote them in advance and took like a whole week for recording them (IIRC from the interviews). And unfortunately this lead to a point where this raw natural aggressive feeling was lost. The vocals on this album sound so forced and generic as if they recorded them multiple times and did some computer stuff in addition until it was "perfect". The worst example is probably scream for silence. The whole chorus sounds just horrible (that section which starts with "HEY!...") and lacks any energy. Also Dead Mans Hand On You... I cant listen to this song. It sounds so bad to me. The bad mixing of the keyboard, the punch lacking drums and the boring vocals make this song sound like complete trash to me.
All for Nothing (similar song style) on IWC was so much better. The good thing about IWC was that the instrumental production was so much better. The lacking amtosphere was back. The vocals werent as great as before Halo but a step in the right direction.
And then they nailed it perfectly again on Hexed. Great instrumental sound and the vocals had this raw aggressive feeling again whilst the lyrics were more thoughtful at the same time. The perfect combination and as I said earlier, Alexis best vocal work.
That said: There are a few Songs on Halo that I enjoy listening to. Waste of Skin, All Twisted, One Bottle and the Cover Songs (Sleeping in My Car, Cruel Summer, Crazy Nights). The problems I mentioned arent as bad on those songs for some reason. Especially on the Cover songs it feels like the vocals where recorded in the familiar quick and dirty style, which is great.

Here you can view the exhibition digitally. I also noticed that they put up a store where you can buy signed prints of there pictures.

https://www.strikes-and-gutters.com/exhibition-store

Did anyone check this out earlier? The shop starts with number 2. Is number 1 already sold out and delisted? Number 4 is missing too. But I had a look into the digital exhibition and number 2 and 4 are missing there as well. So they probably dont exist.

The Prices are really crazy for these prints. Im actually thinking about purchasing number 27. I always loved this picture and its fun to look at.

Apparently not all the images are available for sale. For example the crowd photo (nr. 4) was never available for purchase because all of the depicted individuals would have to consent. As for the numbers, I don’t think there was ever nr.1, the first one has always been the hurriganes/car one.

I think the prices make sense considering those are really high quality pieces of art. Some of them are also quite big. This exhibition was really nice and moving.
