The Novella Vosselaar

hahaha, I'll be getting this one in the mail soon and I'll let you know what I think! I can't wait.

Yeah, it looks a lot less grainy from the actual DVD.

It's dark. Novembers Doom play dark metal.
Perfect mix. The footage match the atmosphere perfectly in my opinion.

All I can say about the quality of the DVD is this... Novembers Doom will ALWAYS give you the very best quality we possibly can given the tools we have available to us. The film crew were filled with a very polite and nice group of guys, but sadly at the end of the day, they made mistakes with the video (which they refuse to admit they made) and the quality of the video does suffer for it a bit. Unlike audio that can be fixed somewhat with mixing, the video can only be helped so much, and Tony at Cage XXI did an amazing job with what we gave him.

I can say, we will NEVER use that video company again, and we'll never send them business either. I know of another band who used them after we did, and before we had the chance to view our footage, and I know they are very disappointed as well. It's a lesson learned for us, and next time, we won't make the same mistake twice.

Just to give you the short story of the video issues, out of 6 cameras used, one angle was completely useless. The cameras all shot the show in LP mode, causing the video to have grain and lower quality. The pick up shots were shot in EP mode, and the quality difference was night and day. Combine this with a PAL to NTSC conversion causing it's own quality loss, your end result was a much less then desirable master tapes. Tony at Cage XXI spent weeks running all the video through color correction and grain removal filters to make them all match.

When I contacted the video company and explained the issues, I was told there is no difference between LP and EP mode in recording... I was actually insulted this guy tried to convince me of this.

Well, bottom line, we turned lemons into lemonade, and for the first time in our careers, and again, all thanks to Tony Myles, we polished a turd, and in my opinion, came out with a kick ass product, worthy of release, and equal quality to MANY of the underground metal DVD's on the market.

I love the underground feel to it, and I think it really captured the live experience from that night. A dark, packed metal venue, with a very enthusiastic crowd. I'd do it there again in a heart beat.

Next DVD we do, we learn from our past experience, and we make a better product. Maybe HD and 5.1. Who knows.

"another band", heh.

Some of our footage turned out really good, especially the front stage camera. We decided to just "go artistic" with the dark, grainy stuff in post production. You know, turn it black and white, tweek the hell out of the highlights and shadows, overlap angles, and so on. This way there are some great dynamics in the final edited result. It seems to work with the atmosphere of our performance anyway.

That damn film crew...nice guys and they followed my directions well ("zoom up on the fog", "get strange angles", "pretend you are Gaspar Noé", etc) but they didn't seem to have a clue about color calibration, white balancing, or the effects of different film speeds in dark lighting...

Out of respect for Agalloch, I didn't want to drop your name in case you didn't want people to know your business. I thought it would be best to leave it up to you IF you wanted to even mention it. No disrespect John, actually quite the opposite.

No worries. I actually didn't take it as disrespect or anything but just thought it was amusing. It gave me an opportunity to chime in on the topic.

And I also don't see a problem with your DVD's quality. Everything seems to fit the mood of your style. It's not an Iron Maiden DVD but it's not a Khanate or Mutiilation DVD either. Besides I'd rather watch a grainy, all black and white Khanate DVD instead of the recent polished Maiden crap where there are a billion edits every second for those with no attention span...

ND / Agalloch US tour....

How about it fellas?

I'd be totally into with it...but we are scheduling nightmare so I don't know how soon/feasible that would be.

I have talked to Blake from Nachtmystium and a couple of the ND guys as well about playing together in Chicago. We've never played there and would like to. Maybe next year sometime, who knows.

Wow either an Agalloch/ND or Agalloch/Natchmystium tour would be absolutely awesome!

At the end of the day we all know these are UNDERGROUND(ish) bands so we shouldn't expect extreme high quality, although I have no quibbles with the ND dvd at all, good stuff all around in my opinion. I'm looking forward to the Agalloch dvd, "Gasper Noe angles" sounds interesting, heh....I love Gasper.

We are playing in London next March with Dornenreich, Fen, and Mely. I don't know if you are far from London but that would likely be your only chance to see us for many years if you are interested...

Hey Paul,
I'm listening to Bethlehem's SUIZID CD right now and just noticed you did the layout for it. \m/
I take it you did a lot of work for Red Stream (Skepticism also) years ago?
