The Novella Vosselaar

Hey, when are you guys playing in SF next? I bet your songs would be phenomenal live. I admit that I only recently acquired The Mantle, but it's really a fantastic album. Some of the vocals remind of Orphaned Land weirdly. A lot of it reminds me of Primordial too, the folk influence. It's very original though.

Both times we played SF, our shows were horrible. Seriously. I felt like we owed the audience their money back. Bad sound, bad vibe, bad performance, just bad. It must be something in the air...that city hates us. We would like to give it another shot...but ONLY if Asunder is on the bill. We've somehow managed to miss or fuck up every opportunity to play a gig with those guys for the past 2 years. They were in Portland the other night on tour with Corrupted and I ran into John Gossard and he was like; "oh hey it's Haughm from that band that never wants to play with us", heh. Not true! Hopefully next year though, depending on when we do the next record.

I don't know much about Orphaned Land other than I didn't like what I heard. A bit too happy for my tastes. Don likes them but they've never been an influence or anything.

Anyway...back to ND related discussions. I feel like I hijacked this thread.

Really??? Normally bands LOVE SF. What venues have you played?

Curve Bar/Lucifer's Hammer ('03) and The Elbo Room ('06). We were supposed to play The Great American Music Hall this year with Asunder but it fell through (obviously).

I love SF but SF doesn't like us very much. LA doesn't like us either but at least the feeling is mutual.

You would be wrong. The budget wasn't the issue. It was mistakes made by the video company. We PAID for quality. Don't assume.
Sorry, I just saw Larry say it wasn't the same budget as bigger bands and assumed. My mistake. :(

At any rate I had good things to say about the DVD :D

That's because those are crappy venues haha. If you guys played at Slims or perhaps even a bigger venue like the Filmore (I love the filmore!) I'm sure it'd be much better. GAMH's not a bad venue but Slims is IMO much better.

We are playing in London next March with Dornenreich, Fen, and Mely. I don't know if you are far from London but that would likely be your only chance to see us for many years if you are interested...

Hey Paul,
I'm listening to Bethlehem's SUIZID CD right now and just noticed you did the layout for it. m/
I take it you did a lot of work for Red Stream (Skepticism also) years ago?

Yeah, I used to do everything for them at the time. We had an unfortunate misunderstanding, and a falling out at the time, but I've always thought Pat (the owner) was a good guy.

and unfair to the rest of the world hahaha

LOL, well we toured with Agalloch in the Northeast back in 2004, and we toured Europe with them back in 2006. So the rest of the world has had the potential opportunity :) Maybe one day we'll get to the West Coast.

As for playing "crappy venues", the problem is that the bands very rarely have any choice or say in what venue they get to play when coming through on tour. The booking agent handles all of that, and alot of times the really primo places won't bid on a smaller underground metal tour like ours. So as much as we or Agalloch I'm sure would be interested in playing the Fillmore or something, it's not as simple as saying, "Hey next time let's just play there!" Haha, I wish it were that simple!

Yeah, let's be realistic here.
I don't think an ND / Agalloch gig would fill the Fillmore, no more than it would fill the Aragon or Riv here in Chicago.

Either way, I am stoked for it to "possibly" happen sometime in the future.

I was watching the DVD last night and noticed something that I hadn't seen before. During Dark World Burden, the band kicks in right after the intro. From what I can tell, there isn't a count-off from the drummer, which I find incredibly impressive. Maybe I'm wrong and if it is there I just couldn't hear it.

Either way, I just thought it was awesome to see the band jump right in without missing a beat.
