King Crimson - there's no excuse for not having at least one of their albums. None whatsoever, even if you despise progressive rock.
Which one would you pick for everyone? I'd say Lark's Tongues or Red, but then again for a metal crowd I'd rather recommend The Power to Believe or ConstruKction of Light. Then for the 80s crowd there's... :)

Carcass - Necroticism and Heartwork

Bob Dylan - any

Black Sabbath - all with Ozzy, especially Volume 4.

Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk

Pig Destroyer - Prowler in the Yard

Nile - In their Darkened shrines

If you dont own those you dont have a fucking clue about metal

If we're doing non-metal, then this opens it up a bit...everyone HAS to own:

Radiohead - OK Computer

That album makes 90% of all other musicians sound like retarded gimps.

Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
Ulver - The good ones
Metallica - Pre-Black Album

Maybe no surprises, but that's how it is.

EDIT: How the fuck can I forget Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldi while listening to it?

Danzig - 4p
Even if you hate Danzig with a passion, you still need this album. There is no album that sounds this black. Not necessarily evil, just completely black. Quite possibly the greatest record ever done, and you've never heard it. :p

Tool - ÆNIMA
Definitely a candidate for greatest album of all time, there is a certain mystery contained that has never been obtained anywhere else. Simply monumental.

Megadeth - Rust In Peace
The pinnacle of thrash, I'm almost sorry that this was my the first thrash album I ever purchased, because everything else just pales in comparison. Every metal bassist must heed the teachings of the mighty Ellefson on this one.

I'm getting this.

I'm almost afraid to say that the same might occur with EMPEROR's In the Nightside Eclipse. I know you're on a BM run, and I'm honestly thinking you might want to build up to Nightside Eclipse - it's that fucking beautifully haunting (and the first time you hear it pales in comparison to the tenth time you hear it).
