The official movie thread

I agree about 300, great action but poor story telling. To me a movie is only as good as its story as well.

Munich is horribly done, especially considering it's a spielberg piece. *spoiler* There's a huge turning point in the end where they're supposed to kill the head hauncho, and they show up at his house and try to kill him but his men see them and start to chase them. But it cuts from that scene, and you have no clue what happened, how the hell they got out of that, or what happens to the guys friend, and thats pretty much the end of the movie. What the crap is that!?!

i finally saw The Fountain. liked it very much.

Pi and Requiem For A Dream were pretty much extreme in some ways (tho Pi was more of a hommage to Lynch's Eraserhead), and i liked Darren being more poetic with The Fountain now.

about David Lynch:

Blue Velvet is really good, not so much symbolism and such stuff there, but Dennis' acting was stunning.

the Twin Peaks series, Lost Highway and Mullholland Dr are my personal Lynch faves.

@Alcapoth:
if you liked Eraserhead so much, don't expect ther same out of Inland
Empire - i haven't seen Inland yet, but i read on imdb that isn't so extreme, or not extreme at all, it's more noir and atmosphere in the vein of his latter movies. try to find Elephant Man.

the narrator in 300 (faramir in lord of the rings) really really really sucked
his voice was sooo cheesy
"taugh NEVA TO RETREAT... NEVA TO SURRENDA!"
what accent is that anyways?

good movie though

If you haven't yet, I highly recommend watching Shine, a film about the life of pianist David Helfgott. It's a very emotional movie. I loved it. Also if you like classical music, you will like it. Excellent performance by Geoffrey Rush... such a great actor he is.

Edit: I saw in some other post I said I was gonna watch the Godfather trilogy again... and so I did. Just one word: excellent! I realized the third part is not as bad as many people say... I actually like it very much but definitely the first one is the best for me, besides, Marlon Brando stars in it and I love his role as Don Vito Corleone.

Mulholland is by far lynches best but lost highway is amazing too if you can look past all the plot holes.

well, tastes are different i'd say. many say that blue velvet is lynches best because its most "normal" and it has the strongest romantic/paradox note to it

i think that the "plot holes" in lost highway are more to the idea of the movie, it opens more various personal interpretations about the dual personalities lynches is always about.

i can't tell if i prefer highway to mullholland or the other way round (depends on the mood i guess), but the most important thing is that both are so umistakeably lynch.

I watched Lost Highway last year and all I had from the movie are assumptions...I didn't see anybody that really got what the hell is happening in the movie. So a few clues about it would be good for me if anyone had an idea of course:)Btw I saw Premonition today and all I can say is Sandra Bullock is hot:lol: Nah not that bad...It has a good complex plot but though it is a complex story you can see the ending coming...It was enjoyable, not a waste of time at least. The next for me is Pan's Labyrinth,I'm really curious about it...

ok, i just watched some bits and pieces from The Perverts Guide To Cinema narrated by Slavoj Zizek (Slovenian superstar philosopher/psychoanalyst).

http://imdb.com/title/tt0828154/

***SPOILERS***
he has a theory that Lost Higway and Mullholland Dr are two movies about the same stories.
well, same movies shown through two fantasies, masculine (Lost Highway) and feminine (Mullholland).
actually, he is saying that the guy in Lost Highway killed his wife because he was frustrated by the asumption she was cheating on him. later, in jail he transforms himself into his fantasy world, where she (Patricia Arquette), his woman from fantasy, transforms into reality. she transforms the way he imagined her to be. her boss is the obstacle as we all know, but the problem and the key moment is when she, the fantasy woman, says to him "you will never have me". that's the end of the fantasy part, and the interesting thing is that both the reality world (ending with him killing her) and his fantasy world (ending with her walking away from him) end the same - he can't have her.
the hotel scenes are the limbo - him getting back from fantasy world to reality.

i asume that Mullholland is about the same thing, but watched from feminine point of view, feminine fantasy (Naomi Watts and her transformation). Slavoj says that feminine fantasies are richer and stronger than masculine ones (he gave Eyes Wide Shut for example, Nicole Kidman's fantasies vs. Cruise's ones)

***SPOILER***

I too thought that was the point the movie turns to the fantasy world but the complex thing is how the hell he came back to reality? And there was this his trembling scene in the car,I assumed that as the reflection of reality that he is being killed by an electrical chair...Can that be true?God I'm gonna watch it again tomorrow:)

^^ END SPOILER^^

*spoiler*

I thought it was obvious that mulholland drive was about limbo before going to hell for these people. Waiting in limbo spirits pass through others memories, until they figured out who they were they couldn't be judged or punished. The box is heaven or hell however you see it and the bum is god or the devil however you see it.

Yeah..I pretty much rule at these things.

edit: the whole thing is they're examine something that already happened, since they're already dead.

So I bought Babel's dvd today and watched it.I must say that I'm really impressed. It's a lot like Crash but more down to earth and straight to the point.A classic Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu film.If you liked his other films you'll probably like this one.Actually Babel seems my fave compared to Amores Perros and 21 Grams. If you saw it already I'd like to have a few conversations with a lot of spoilers in it:)

It's great, I saw it in the cinema. Just watched Amores Perros last weekend actually and saw 21 Grams already some time ago, but I think Babel is my favourite Iñarritu movie too, it touched me most. I need to watch it again to refresh my memory a bit.

The most recent films I have watched are TIDELAND and THE DESCENT. I rented these out and was blown away by both. Someone at work recommended I watch The Descent saying it's one of the freakiest film's made in recent memory, haha. I have to say I kind of agree with that statement - very, very entertaining and frightening (tense.) As for Tideland - I somehow doubt anyone here has even heard of it, but wow...it's that girl from Silent Hill and boy does she do a fantastic job here. It kinda reminded me of Alice in Wonderland, just by only looking at the cover. And when I watched the movie, my assumptions were correct. This little girl is all alone in this huge environement and her imagination runs wild - it's just a pretty fucked up experience, to say the least. Very imaginative. You really have to watch it to appreciate it and well, if artsy films aren't your thing chances are the movie isn't for you. I enjoyed it, though. Very creative and original.

Anyway, I'm glad to see all this Lynch discussion here haha. He's a genius! As well, I seriously have to rent out Babel and see what all the fuss is about.

Spider.Man.Three.

nuff said, see that shit asap, went at midnight day one at the first showing in my town, fucking incredible. if you like the first 2 you'll love this one, venom oh my may be small in comparison to comics/cartoons but holy shit he is fucking awsome.

only gripe is ending, kinda wtf. and Emo peter was pretty gay, yet quite funny.
Saw it again at the imax(for those whom dont know, that is a REALLY big movie screen/theater. like shit i dunno maybe 50-100ft tall? and 12,000watts of like 40.1 surround sound).
