#50 - Dirge for November
definitely my least favorite song on BWP. first of all, the biggest problem - the intro and outro have absolutely nothing to do with the core "metal" part of the song, like they don't even attempt to tie it in at all. the intro just stops, then the metal comes in, then it stops, then the soft conclusion comes in. also the middle heavy part is VERY repetitive and it feels too stretched out. that said, the intro really is quite nice and the song is listenable overall. but opeth has done greater things for sure.
#49 - The Grand Conjuration
problem: the main riff. this is probably opeth's most repetitive song (and that's a bad thing). also, i do not like the nu-metallish production, with the whispered sounds and shit in the background. BUT this song has some insanely badass parts, namely the solo and of course, THEEEEEE GRAAAAANNNDDD etc. they could have easily cut some of the gristle off of this one and made it a few minutes shorter, it would have been a better song.
#48 - Nectar
easily my least favorite from morningrise. of the 5 songs on the album, it's the only one that doesn't really have a central idea or at least a vibe pulling it together. it has that classic opeth feel like all their early stuff, so that's cool, but i feel this one really drags after a certain point. every other morningrise song has heaps better riffs than this one. so conclusion: it's not bad while it's playing but it's not all that memorable.
#47 - Beneath the Mire
this one reminds of the grand conjuration in that i don't much care for most of it, but it's made up for by one really awesome part, and of course that would be the soft part starting from 3:43. double guitar/synth solo = YES. also, i never really liked the way this song doesn't really end, it just kind of peters out at the end. lmao i just realized the amazing pun there because peter's solo is near the end. peters out rofl
#46 - Karma
pretty solid but it kind of blends in with the MAYH sound. fairly good stuff here but i never find myself specifically wanting to listen to karma. i always kind of thought of this one as a prototype of sorts to wreath, i.e. fast metal intro but then it turns into this sort of slow plodding feel for much of the rest of the song, eventually working its way back up to a fast ending. speaking of the ending, the whole part starting from "winter's epilogue" is pure wreckage, easily the best part of the song.
