The Opeth Countdown, Revisited ('09 Edition)

I love how Arasmas is usually hated and called a troll in this forum and when someone gave him props for this list everyone else started doing it too  :p

^ I've never called Arasmas a troll. And I didn't give him props because everyone else was doing it. I did so because it was an entertaining thread and in this case, the props were well deserved. I would have said the same regardless of who created the thread. *shrug.*

Nah, Arasmus is ok. It's the Frodo guy who's a worthless jackass.

Also Patterns in the Ivy is the track that got me into Opeth, but I understand why it'd be ranked low.

^
Patterns in the Ivy was one of the tracks that got me into Opeth as well but I cant believe he ranked it that low. Come one man, thats a pretty dope song.
Anyways im glad that more people think the porcelain heart is not a good opeth song, cause it really isn't.

Arasmas tends to look for more consistent and complete things. And I totally agree with this. When thinking about Opeth, Atonement or Patterns in the Ivy are far from being the first songs in my mind. But facts are that there are so many good songs that we don't have any choice to put good ones in shit position. Don't talk about the songs alone, but about the ensemble of songs. Compare. What song would have been worse? If you don't find a lot of them, then I think this list is not bad, though as we all fucking know, it's all fucking subjective.

#50 - Dirge for November

definitely my least favorite song on BWP. first of all, the biggest problem - the intro and outro have absolutely nothing to do with the core "metal" part of the song, like they don't even attempt to tie it in at all. the intro just stops, then the metal comes in, then it stops, then the soft conclusion comes in. also the middle heavy part is VERY repetitive and it feels too stretched out. that said, the intro really is quite nice and the song is listenable overall. but opeth has done greater things for sure.

#49 - The Grand Conjuration

problem: the main riff. this is probably opeth's most repetitive song (and that's a bad thing). also, i do not like the nu-metallish production, with the whispered sounds and shit in the background. BUT this song has some insanely badass parts, namely the solo and of course, THEEEEEE GRAAAAANNNDDD etc. they could have easily cut some of the gristle off of this one and made it a few minutes shorter, it would have been a better song.

#48 - Nectar

easily my least favorite from morningrise. of the 5 songs on the album, it's the only one that doesn't really have a central idea or at least a vibe pulling it together. it has that classic opeth feel like all their early stuff, so that's cool, but i feel this one really drags after a certain point. every other morningrise song has heaps better riffs than this one. so conclusion: it's not bad while it's playing but it's not all that memorable.

#47 - Beneath the Mire

this one reminds of the grand conjuration in that i don't much care for most of it, but it's made up for by one really awesome part, and of course that would be the soft part starting from 3:43. double guitar/synth solo = YES. also, i never really liked the way this song doesn't really end, it just kind of peters out at the end. lmao i just realized the amazing pun there because peter's solo is near the end. peters out rofl

#46 - Karma

pretty solid but it kind of blends in with the MAYH sound. fairly good stuff here but i never find myself specifically wanting to listen to karma. i always kind of thought of this one as a prototype of sorts to wreath, i.e. fast metal intro but then it turns into this sort of slow plodding feel for much of the rest of the song, eventually working its way back up to a fast ending. speaking of the ending, the whole part starting from "winter's epilogue" is pure wreckage, easily the best part of the song.

I don't entirely disagree, but thought I'd add that "Nectar" has one of Opeth's best intros.

wut, the bass fill right before the main riff is fucking epic.

EDIT: then again, I pay more attention to bass than most metal fans. A bass player putting just the tiniest bit of fun into a certain section can have me squealing with joy, while the majority of metalheads who are more guitar/drum driven are like, "what's with you, that was nothing special?"

Yeah #47 Beneath the Mire will get a few remarks. :err: Great song imo, and I love Dirge for November but Im weird.

Also no songs from Still Life yet when every album already had one or more... Awesome = most solid album!

lol you asshead, i play bass, there is absolutely nothing special about that bass fill

The fact that you play bass doesn't negate the fact that I get a kick out of some bass parts that you don't. You asshead.

I smell the morning aroma. A new day... I am a rich man.

well i don't give a shit if you "get a kick out of some bass parts" but the way you presented it was that you "pay more attention to bass than most metal fans," which implies that you have some sort of better appreciation than the rest of us philistines. but this is negated by the fact that the intro to nectar has you "squealing with joy"
