The REAL football thread.

I don't care this year.

We didn't get it, but as a result, we got a better coach :D

Yes you did incredibly well against world football super powers the USA and Trinidad in the lead up to.... well nothing at all really

Nah you poms should be alright, new coach seems alright and you've got so much class in the side James looks like he's becoming a quality keeper which you've missed for the last couple o' years

PS sorry about bashing the US, USAIANS your team is really not all that bad really no worse off than Australia is at the moment

 We won. Which is better than McClaren did half the time.

It's about fucking time. Only taken him till 35. And he still makes a couple of dodgy decisions.

Capello is a wog that usually helps he's done very well at club football but from experience Dutch is better:lol:

Well the terrible news is that a great Aussie keeper like Schwarzer won't happen till' probably 5-10 years after he retires from the 'roos
which after watching England's poor run with is horrifying, the bloke single handedly saved Australia the other night against them Iraqis

I just hope Scotty McDonald can manage to net a couple and we go through to the next stage on Monday mourning

The other thing I haven't said yet is the Qatar n' China nil all'd which is an excellent outcome for us

james has always been a quality shot-stopper, problem is he has these funny five minutes where he does something totally stupid. kind of like barthez except less intentional. i'd still prob play him first choice for now, but we'll see. got some good youngsters coming through, i don't think it's a position we really need to worry about.

i've already lost all confidence in capello though, i won't be happy 'til there's a major clearout. my ideal team would be something like:
james
richards terry rio ________
bentley barry j cole young
rooney walcott/agbonlahor

i wish we had better players on the left, no idea who to play at left back these days. same old story there. cole and bridge can get fucked. i'm not that confident in young yet but he deserves more of a chance, and christ, he's better than downing. i guess j cole could play left wing in which case i'd maybe put hargreaves in the middle. just as long as neither gerrard or lampard are playing i'm happy. and crouch, god, anyone but crouch. becks i would use as a super sub.

anyway let's stop talking about that shit and focus on the euros; i can't wait for tomorrow. im literally bouncing up and down thinking about it. i might miss some of the first match as well, ughh. my prediction is:

semis:
germany vs. czech republic
france vs. italy

final:
france vs. germany

winners: france

Euros are coming baby! I'm super-psyched.

Some nice choices for an England line up ncfow, but Gerrard often plays very well for England, I don't know why you're so opposed to him...

My team would be something like this:

Green
Richards Terry Lescott Bridge
Bentley Lampard Gerrard Cole
Defoe Derbyshire

okay, I only put Derbyshire in because he plays for Rovers. I seriously wouldn't play Rooney though, he's overrated as hell and England often try and fit a system around him just so he can play 'in the hole', which is just fucking stupid. We do have a lack of quality up front though. Owen never convinces me, Bent could be very good if he played regularly... but he doesn't. Walcott needs more games too. Agbonlahor is kinda like Walcott, he seems a bit unrefined, give them both a few years to improve heading and finishing... we're really lacking a Shearer type player. We've got a whole load of pacey short forwards, but all we've got in the way of alternatives is Crouch or Heskey and they're just not good enough imo. Crouch does have quite a good scoring record though...
I still maintain Lampard and Gerrard can work in the middle together as long as you're not a retard. Gerrard can play a less advanced role than Lampard and it would work out fine. They're both great players and there's no reason they can't work together, a lot of people just seem to have conceded that it can't work because it's been a mismanaged partnership in the past.

I personally reckon:

James/Carson
Richards - Terry - Woodgate - Bridge
Bentley - Gerrard - Hargreaves - J. Cole
Owen - Heskey

James is a good keeper nowadays (despite the occasional eccentric moment, he doesn't do it nearly as much as he used to) and Carson is too. That Croatia game seems to have blotted his record unfairly. Richards is ace, and watching him swap positions with Beckham in the games they played together was awesome. Bentley's a good replacement for Beckham. Gerrard and Lampard CAN'T work together. AT ALL. It's been proven again and again. J. Cole's a brilliant winger, though another option in my eyes would be Young. Say what you want about Heskey, the two games he played in he did the job he should do. He held the ball up, and knocked it on etc etc. And Owens a good player, maybe not good as he used to be, but still good.

Just finished watching the Portugal/Turkey game. Credit where credit is due, Portugal were dominating the entire game, but I got really sick of the commentators verbally sucking Ronaldo's cock.

Gerrard often plays very well for England

in friendlies

I seriously wouldn't play Rooney though, he's overrated as hell

rooney's totally amazing when he's on form, he's too inconsistent though

it's a mentality thing for me, nothing to do with them not being able to work together. obviously they're great players for their clubs, but we already gave them more than one chance at major tournaments, they choked. worst two english players in the last world cup, no question, and i thought it was far from just a tactical issue. tactics don't tend to make great players suddenly incapable of passing the ball.

if the manager could motivate them then i'd reconsider, problem is i'm yet to see any evidence of it and they've been given a long long time now. lampard doesn't even usually play well in friendlies so i'm becoming especially intolerant of him.

if you still think i'm biased then, well, i am a utd fan. ;)

as much as i love clive tyldesley i do actually agree with this, that free kick wasn't half as great as he made out. then again he did say "ronaldos had some good moments and some not so good moments" which i think was a pretty accurate assessment. i thought ronaldo did what he always does in big games for the first half hour or so, tried too hard to impress, but he played well later on

portugal will choke, mark my words. well i hope so anyway. impressive display but they shouldve scored more goals considering the amount of chances/set pieces etc. they still have no great strikers, so they'll be relying a lot on consistently firing wingers/CMs and against a really big side that could be their downfall.

i was impressed by turkey btw, i wouldn't be surprised if they qualified after that display. they had their own problems putting it in the net though, and i'm sure the czechs are capable of much better, so i'm still going for the czech rep.

I dont think the Czechs are as good as they used to be any more, especially since Koller does not seem to be fully free of injuries.

Today's game between Italy and Holland will be awesome. The favorites to win are Italy of course, the world champions.
