The Silent Enigma

This was the second album which I heard from them (Eternity was first). I really liked it, too (though not every track is my favourite). Silent Enigma is the best song imo. Also I like the 'orchestral version' of this song, pity it couldn't be made with a real orchestra.

But themselves, the band said it was not a real good album regarding that they wrote the songs in a rush, they got rid of Darren, etc..

But maybe they can explain it better.

Ok.... this is what I think: This album contains fantastic songs (Shroud Of Frost, Sunset Of Age, A Dying Wish, Silent Enigma) but also some not that good (Restless Oblivion for example gets too boring when the chorus is repeated for like 20 times, Cerulian Twilight lacks unity, Alone is a bit pointless). That's why Eternity and A4 are so great. Because they are no bad songs in them (only Radiance I don't like that much). Anyway.... that's a personal opinion. I hope I'm not being too critical, it's just how I feel. I do like SE. But just not as much as the next two.....

IMHO:this album is not anathema best, but it's anathema...special!its unique in the sense that its the first with vinnie on vox(unrepeated since after that they didnt sing that way).and i like his growls quite much! also,it contains a dying wish, probably the ultimate song for me...and last, its the album before the majestic eternity,it has the same atmosphere as eternity and i certainly love it(little more than Alt4-sorry sol!)

a soul will die,a soul willl die...

Noooooo.... nothing's better than A4.... me sad....
:(

ok,this which i'm about to say will be really brave:did you notice that every single song on Alt is made solely?words & music by him,the other,etc...no cooperation!i dont like that , and its obvious sometimes too.so i have to see it more as a collection of songs, rather than an album by anathema.it has divine songs,no doubt.but it lacks,in features of coherence...(have i dived too deep?)its just my humble opinion, ive said it,you can kill me now:)

I think it's different in each band because there are strong personalities and musicians who can rule the whole band. Not because they are selfish idiots or something but because they are good musicians and the others are only following them because they are not that good in songwriting.

IMO the songs which were written by only one person - especially when we speak about darker songs - are the best songs. They can be deeply from the soul.

When they are rehearsing they cannot make songs with the same feelings (as what they write alone), especially when there are stupid and selfish people in a band. It's hard to work together when you cannot arrange anything. And then you can not really concentrate when you feel kinda 'punishment'
.

The best anathema album so far. And it will be really difficult for any album to touch the highs of this masterpiece in the future.

I have EXACTLY the same opinion. If the boyz manage to do better than that then I can exit this sad cruel world...... (just jokin':) )

yeahh, but the meaning of being a band is not just to play the music scores together(or am i fooled once again? )its also about sharing thoughts, not neccecarily agree totally with eachother, but having some similar attitude.

surely there are some who break away from the pack(of the band),like duncan who had inspiration at the time and he is the man on alt4,but i think the album showed some inconsistency reflecting the relationship among the band members, and dunc proved that by leaving.as far as i know the old feelings have been left behind, thats good!

i'm not accusing anybody at all. maybe alt4 has just too much of a personal feeling in each song for me!(if that can make it clear)

Why does everyone seem to forget about Judgement? It might be without Duncan, but it is still a masterpiece... Everybody seem to talk about Anathema having in mind only Alt. 4... Judgement might not be as dark as Alt. 4, but it is definately very emotional... One of the best albums I've ever heard in my life... Very underrated album...

Anyway, take care :)

hey, whats the darkness in eg empty? not to mention that darkness is a fragile term(btw,i dont think fragile dreams is dark too).it has the darkest ssong (alt4),but as a whole,no.so... dont say its dark, say just you like it,it echoes better :)

I use to say alternative 4 is the best album i've ever heard and judgement is the best rock/ metal album of the 90's. :D I know it doesn't make sence since they 're both released in the same decade, but somehow it feels this way...As you can see i really adore judgement (my 2nd favorite after A4) and i think is better than afdte. The main difference between these is that in A4 each song has it's own personality, with very heavy emotional pressure and incredibly dark and original melodies...On the other hand judgement, it's really an album that you have to listen as a whole (and it's more trippy than A4 so this comes naturally), coz it's poison doesn't come from each different song but from the listening procedure of all of them. Depress, darkness, pessimism, tragedy, lonelyness are feelings that are well hided in the judgement album. I listen to a certain song and say:-This is sweet, erotic, trippy or whatever, but in the end, as the album goes and grows inside me i get a bitterness that only with certain songs of A4 i can compair it. Judgement finishes you slowly, slowly, slowly...In A4 you have to face chaos from it's first chords...

i think you have a weird meaning for the word 'dark'. it seems to me that for you a song is dark when it has weird keyboards sounds and uncommon chord progression and that. let me tell you that in my own humble opinion, the lyrics for empty combined with the music gives a feeling dark as fuck to me. you should pay more attention to the lyrics, they are half of the effect, and you can get a dark atmosphere through them even though you have major chords. just take 'soma' from the smashing pumpkins, perfect exemple.

i think moody is right, in some songs the lyrics make the darkness. For me it's the same with Panic. The music itself isn't very dark, but the lyrics let it grow on me.
