The Smiths

So whats some of everyones favorite songs? Lets keep it at 5 to 10 or so. Really hard to choose but I'll throw some out there: Rusholme Ruffians, Nowhere Fast, That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore, William it was Really Nothing, Still Ill, There is a Light That Never Goes Out, The Queen is Dead, Meat is Murder, Handsome Devil, How Soon is Now....

My top 10 would be something like this: Hand in Glove, I know it's over, Shoplifters of the world unite, How soon is now?, Bigmouth strikes again, What difference does it make?, The Queen is Dead, There is a light that never goes out, Handsome Devil, That Joke isn't funny anymore.

Yes Morrisey is a cunt, but he writes fucking good music and the The Smiths fucking ROCK. Had there been no Johnny Marr, Graham Coxon would never had become such a good guitarist himself. I LOVE THE SMITHS!

Furthermore, Johnny Marr rules, Graham Coxon rules, Paul Weller rules and Noel Gallagher fucking totally rules :kickass:

My wife likes them. I somehow got through my developmental years in the 80's without hearing them! WTF?! Anyhow, she has the Singles, and I really like it a lot. "This Charming Man" is great, love "How Soon is Now?", and I like the way the music of "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" is juxtaposed with the lyrics. Somehow, the sort of happy quality of the music makes the lyrics more depressing. Good stuff. I'm gonna have to check out more.

Morrisey just played here this month or past month, apparently. At a local venue. I heard he played lots of old stuff. Woulda been cool to go to, but definitely not the same as seeing them in '86.

i was too young to know back then but i heard the smiths were seen as...errr...quite corny or "not cool" back in the 80s. is that true dave?

man, I love The Smiths. I was in my early teens and grew up with The Smiths, The Cure, Siouxie & The Banshees, Joy Division, Depeche Mode and so many more. I consider myself one lucky bastard, for that matter.

@ Don: it is true that many considered the Smiths and The Cure as "not cool", just the same way many emo-bands nowadays are "not cool". But still, everybody respected each other - no ugly words like nowadays

I suppose it depended on what "side" you were on. I was a big Van Halen, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden guy. So let's just say that I wouldn't have been able to appreciate the subtlety of bands like The Cure and The Smiths. But seriously, no one I knew listened to them, the radio I listened to didn't play them, so I never heard them. Maybe some kids at school listened to them, but they were probably off in a corner crying while we blasted "Cum On Feel the Noize" and argued over whether or not he was saying "girls fuck your boys". Fourth grade. Great times. In a weird way, since most of us were listening to hair metal and stuff, the cool ones were probably the ones who listened to something other than what the mob of us did...

My wife went to see the Smiths in 87 with her older sister. Very cool.
