Since I've only really started listening to MAYH alot recently, this only occured to me now. What the hell is the deal with the snare during the chorus of the song?

Does Lopez have the snares removed so that it sounds like a wood block? Is he rimshotting it? Is it even a snare? Drummers, help, plz.

i think he has the snare clamp off and its a fairly long snare, add the weird reverb they chose and u have the snare work at the start of the track, however when it moves into the song its different and he rimshots it.

yeah he's rimshotting it. it's a fairly common thing in slow songs or acoustic things. just check out nirvana unplugged :Spin:

btw, the drums sound miserable on MAYH

No, just the snare sucks. The rest of the kit sounds pretty good if you ask me, especially the Bass drum.

 Hi Moonlapse!

NIRVANA HAD DRUMS!?!?! :hypno:

Yeah, the bass drum on MAYH is a pretty killer untriggered sound. Could use a bit more consistency during the double-kick parts, but I guess Opeth weren't big on blending samples back then.

Hey unicorn.

yes, a bit more consistency would be good, but that's the way it sounds untriggered if the drummer doens't do it perfect. But the recording has charme.
Are we talking about productions again? :D
By the way, I recorded drums last weekend for my project. Not bad for an acoustic set, but not reaching the new metal standards. :(

Cool, good to hear dude. I've got a session coming up tomorrow, but I don't even know what I'm recording at the moment. I just sequenced some drums for an Opeth cover that I'm doing, and I think it should be pretty good. Hopefully my best production job yet.

About the inconsistency, yeah... that's pretty much how it is. It's horrible to deal with a real drummer who doesn't know how to tune their kit nor play it consistently. Seems like no amount of compression will save you, haha. Of course not saying Lopez is one of these... he's a great player, and his kit generally sounds great.

Create a song-thing?? I carted all the equipment and the gear away, nothing there left to record, besides carpet. :)

@Moonlapse
I play pretty bad myself. :) I think I really have to add samples. I can send you a snippet, maybe you have some proposals for me.

He uses it in 'Face of Melinda', too. Except on Face of Melinda he uses a brush instead of a stick. Its just a smaller, tighter wound snare.

I remember in the deliverance/damnation documentary where he says that Mike wants him to play as hard and tight as possible (hmm, that sounds quite sick!). I think that's why it's like that.

When it's done, you had better be nice and share it with everyone :).

The best thing about the drums on MAYH is how the cymbals overload the mic sometimes. For example, listen to the beginning of april ethereal, the sound breaks up when the cymbal hits. And yes, this is on the actual album, not just mp3 rips. :P
