This is a thread to keep track of past trends and sometimes trying to spot 'em before they hit actual trend-dom.

The retro-thrash stuff seems to have died out, at least in the universe of trends, and it's successor is...
drumroll
80s heavy/speed metal!
Enforcer and Helvetets Port are the trendiest of the trends now, if you wanna be 'in' and 'hip', you wear a white Exciter shirt with red sleeves (is it baseball shirt?) and cut a lugg in your hair. No bullet belts, the deathspikes can be changed for pyramid studs and your leather jacket can have some red in it. Pants should be tighter than a man's anus, and shoes may still have pictures of the Turtles on them.

In black metal, being a hippie is in - wolves in the throne room and that other band in that other thread and such.

The current RC trend (Last was trad doom) is proggy jazzy stuff I don't really know anything about except it's not metal as hell.

Death metal these days should sound like early stuff by Autopsy, Morbid Angel and such, and you can have black stuff and/or blood in your face and especially around your eyes, but since this has been going on for a while I predict the next big thing (in the metal underground) to be stuff that sounds like early at the gates, hope I'm right.

Since I like both 80s speed/heavy metal and old school dess mettal, this is OK - some good bands are popping up but it's as always starting to get silly in some ways when non-diehards try to be diehards.

Gotta go back to work now =( but feel free to add on or spot my errors and make this a good discussion thread.

"suicidal black metal" is really trendy among the myspace crowd, everyone wants to be shining or lifelover

it's as hard to clone early atg as it is easy to clone slaughter of the soul, i don't think you're right since no band so far has ever sounded like early atg (and it is extremely uncommercial music, to boot)

and isn't the prevailing trend in death metal to be, ahem, "DEATHCORE" and play stupid fucking slam riffs while looking like an idiot

carpet bomb america

Spot on, black kent is the shit these days, apparently. Also, it's called depressive suicidal black metal.

Probably, but that's not metal enough to count - too much of/close to a mainstream trend (I think)

hailz new dsbm band "GRÅTRIST" here from czech republic....check out our new demo "depressive concrete" 88 handnumbered copyes..!!! thanx for the add!!!!

There was a never a doom metal trend. It's just that me, Dodens, Doomcifer, CTH, J and RMS, etc listen to doom a lot. Unless your talking about J. always bumping threads on new doom bands he's found, then it's the case that J. started and ended the trend.

doom metal is the untrendiest shit ever

well trad doom is a little bit trendy within certain circles but it will never be a real trend trend

Haha, I've seen both.. In fact I've seen arguements on whether it's "Depressive Suicidal Black Metal" or "Suicidal Depressive Black Metal" as well. I'm not sure why people get into arguements like this.. who cares.

"Punks is metal" is another current trend, though its not really that bad. Some cool guys to hang out with and pretty good tunes as well.

Non-metal heads disovering the "musicallity" of metal and "admiring the atmosphere and passion" of black metal is going to lead to a lot more bands like Liturgy and Wolves ittr. Black Shoegaze, I swear it, is going to be the new trend.

by now it's the old trend actually, scheduled to die out in about 2-3 years

finding or discovering good music a bit late is a trend? really? then im trendy.

oh well. id call it more stupidity on my part and finally being open minded than trendy.

open mindedness is good to a point, and this point is located right about where you start buying recent samael albums; after that it's downhill towards stupidity again.

Question: Why do we even care about trends? It seems toe destiny of many of you people to troll through the internet/blog world and sort out the good from the absolute shite and post it here for the lazy folks to download and make a decision about.

BECAUSE: If it's not trendy to play some kool kind of metal, only the diehards will do it, and when the diehards do it the success rate is fifteen point ten times as good as when it's trendy, and eighty-one point nine percent as good as when previously good bands turn trend. Thus, when something isn't trendy, you can just head straight into it and expect a lot more good music while a trend creates the need to be very skeptical and ignore most of the stuff that comes from it.

EDIT: and trad doom sure as hell was the RC trend of the month a while back.

EDIT 2:
"Punks is metal" is another current trend, though its not really that bad. Some cool guys to hang out with and pretty good tunes as well.
That's the thing when good shit becomes trendy (to a certain degree), not all of it automatically sux ass. I like Enforcer and think Helvetets Port have their moments, but they're still trendy atm. And Corrupt was better than Enforcer anyway.
