What's the next trend after nu-metal?

Let's assume that the nu-metal trend/fad was indeed truly coming to an end. What would come next? Or what would evolve from it?

I can't imagine what it leaves behind in the world of mainstream music. If you compare it to other phases of 'rock & roll' of the past, for *example*: rockabilly, 'flower power', psychadelia, punk, hair/glam LA metal, grunge -> each of these basically killed the previous, and served some purpose in shaping another follow-on style, but nu-metal...?

Does it all just come to a screeching halt? Or is anything contributing to the death of nu-metal, ready to take its place? What would commercial radio play next?

My curiosity is getting the better of me. :loco:

I wouldn't be surprised if emo took it's place. It has aggression, plus softer moments, plus it's mostly about losing girlfriends, all the hardships of being a teenager (are there really any?) and all that crap that idiots feel speaks for them.

Dreamlord is correct. Scream-O is VERY popular on MTV now. Bands like As I Lay Dying, Ever Time I Die, Thrice, Thursday, etc. are all over the place. In fact, these bands aren't even the next big thing. They are THE big thing.

Interesting. Are those bands popular on MTV on specific shows (like a Headbangers Ball or equivalent), or do they get round the clock general airplay as nu-metal is? Can you imagine them getting played on daytime rock radiostations?

I hear emo on the radio every once in a while. Emo is very popular with the MTV, 'cause it fits the demographics: teenagers. Plus, it works because, like grunge, emo has a sort of clothing fashion to it. Basically, what emo did was take the aggression of nu-metal, lighten it up a bit, and point it in a new direction. Nu-metal is about (supposed) bad childhood's, getting beaten up, and mommy and daddy touching their boy's pee-pees. Emo is about bad relationships, cheating girlfriends, etc...

And whereas nu-metal was supposedly based in metal, emo comes from hardcore.

Who cares, it'll more than likely suck. :)

And Emo is bad. Real bad. Kept hearing about Dashboard Confessional for months, finally saw this shitty SHITTY band on Jay Leno (or something), and I purposely watched it all the way through to hear who they were so I knew which up and coming band to stay away from. Dashboard Confessional. Gag me with a spoon bad.

So every phase had a beginning leader, or at least major player, so just playing this loosely:

Dylan -> Floyd -> Sex Pistols -> Motley Crue -> Nirvana -> Korn

Are this Dashboard Confessional the next major player to join this list?

either them or Thursday, which I've personally owned and couldn't get into it. I don't mind the hardcore parts, but like everyone said, there is way too much whining.

But this begs the question, how can you all hate emo bands for being whiny, yet you all love Anathema who is extremely whiny themselves?

I like BoySetsFire, though, I don't know if they're considered emo. THey are more like hardcore-lite to me, and sing exclusively about gov't corruption and other socio-politcal topics.

If Emo is the next big thing I wouldn't be surprised, only for the fact that I hear that name about 1000 times a month, give or take 998. :)

I don't think Emo is the next big thing, I don't know the style all that well, but to me it pretty much sounds like what groups like the Cure and the Smiths were doing 20 years ago, sans any sort of thought.

Next big thing thing!!!

Do you mean the next trend in rock, or the next trend overall?

In rock, the next trend will probably be some kind of retro-hairspray scene, assuming of course that The Darkness can maintain their success for another few albums.

In mainstream, it could either be that very same retro-hairspray, or some form of anti-guitar electronic/urban music. I've no idea what's brewing in those scenes; the only things I pay any attention to are DHR and IDM.

I'm talking about the next trend in rock/metal. "Anti-guitar electronic/urban music" is here to stay, in a genre all unto itself (particularly in the UK).

Sex Pistols, Motley Crue, and Nirvana epitomized the new trends coming in with a slam-dunk. Nu-metal crept in IMO (it's not as if Korn and their kin ever released a "Never mind the bollocks" or "Nevermind"), and if the next fad is emo, it's creeping in even more quietly.

The rock/metal music scene has pretty much exhausted itself.

I thought we'd already seen some trends come and go - pop punk and rock revolution. Those horrible emo bands are definately gaining popularity but I think they're only a bit more prominent than they were before.

Personally I'm hedging my bets on a possible The Darkness-lead rock/metal revival...and I mean real Rock & Metal! It'll be interesting to see what happens :)

I don't have my fingers anywhere near the pulse of the kewl kidz, so I'm pretty clueless in that regard. Are Dashboard really that popular? I'm gonna take some flack here, but I like them. I have all of their records downloaded. Can't say that I listen to them much, but I do enjoy them in all their whiny acoustic glory.

Honestly, I would take emo (which is rather vague and my interpretation may differ than yours) over nu-metal a thousand times over.

I was reading some interview with rhapsody or labyrinth i believe, and the guitarist said- "In the future, all music will sound like Mortis's The Stargate, and everyone will become trolls just to fit into society."
