The truth about Krank? (are they any good?)

I've noticed a lot of producers or studios will have Kranks but I don't see them much on tour.

I've heard a few clips in the past and remember they sounded really good, much better then any recto tone I've heard. (I'm not a Mesa guy :o)

Shoot, I'd say the opposite is true...Well, as of a couple years ago, anyway. Seemed like EVERYONE had Kranks in 05-06. See a lot less of them today.

When I first tried a Rev1, I was hooked. I've played a few since and thought they sounded like ass. So, either they changed them up a bit in between the 2 I played, or I just didn't keep a good memory of how it sounded. I've never got play them loud, and I've heard that you need to crank them (haha) to get them to sound nice.

For the price of a new Krank, there are many other amps I'd buy before anything Krank has to offer.

Most of the guys I know that had been endorsed by them say they are 'inconsistent' live. Not really sure what that means but I don't play a different town and different venue every night. They always always told me the most solid tone for them was from a 5150 in a live situation and would use anything that sounded good in the studio. They were endorsed by Krank but used other goods live which isn't uncommon. I think Peavey are solid in general, xxx and 5150 have been kind to me! I also know a lot of people that were on Krank went to Randall after one of the big guys that worked for Krank went to Randall. He pulled a lot of the artists over because he treated everyone great regardless of whether they were Mike Amott or not. I can't remember his name, Murphy or someone probably knows.

Dude I don't know what shows you've been seeing but EVERY show I see a krank or a 5150. Whether or not they are a good amp I don't know I've never played one but the clips I hear sound good.

And that's a cool clip.

I've hated every Krank I have ever played, but for some reason the clips I've heard of them sounded amazing. Studio magic. :Smug:

nope, and why would a studio use an amp that requires studio magic when they have access to amps that don't

I've got a Rev1, DR, and 5150 and IMO the Rev1 doesn't take a back seat to either. Disclaimer: I really like the voicing of my Rev1. The Rev1's tone stack like the DR requires understanding.

my Rev1 and DR are more similar than either is to the 5150

Sorry for asking this common (and off-topic) question, but what are the main differences between the 5150 and the 6505? I heard they are very similar in tone. Any first-hand experiences with both?

No difference at all - they're the exact same amps.

Same as with the 6505+ and 5150II...exactly the same.

Not sure if you're familiar with what happened between Peavey and Eddie Van Halen, but long story in short is the contract was "cancelled" and so Peavey had to use a different name, but could use the same circuit and components and everything. So they did.

Which songs in your link are straight Rev1?

Not into Krank amps myself. I think they can sound good when mixed with other amps, but I don't know of anyone who uses them exclusively in the studio or live. You will get a fuller sound out of a 5150, Mesa, XXX, Engl, etc.

Thanks for that, I was actually wondering for quite some time

Kranks seem to have a "dry" tone. It's fine if your going for the generic scooped sound but definitely not my choice of amp
