The truth about Krank? (are they any good?)

Most of the guys I know that had been endorsed by them say they are 'inconsistent' live. Not really sure what that means but I don't play a different town and different venue every night. They always always told me the most solid tone for them was from a 5150 in a live situation and would use anything that sounded good in the studio. They were endorsed by Krank but used other goods live which isn't uncommon. I think Peavey are solid in general, xxx and 5150 have been kind to me! I also know a lot of people that were on Krank went to Randall after one of the big guys that worked for Krank went to Randall. He pulled a lot of the artists over because he treated everyone great regardless of whether they were Mike Amott or not. I can't remember his name, Murphy or someone probably knows.

His name is Jody Dankberg. He offered me an endorsement deal for my band...He's a nice guy to the artists, but he also was the one responsible for the whole fake review thing on Harmony Central which ended up getting Krank banned from their review section. He also bashed every other amp maker, but praised Krank. Odd now that he went to Randall...As far as I know, he also is financially still involved with Krank (part ownership or something like that).

From what i've read/heard/seen recently it seems that Krank are good amps to record with, but live they're not so great.

Played a Rev1 in a shop once but not with my axe/pups, i borrowed a half-cheap jackson from the shop. It was decent but not awesome.

A friend of mine had bought a Krankenstein in addition to his 5150, and everybody in the band (and me also) was disappointed with the sound. I tried one with my guitar in a shop (with its cab) and thought it was average. My friend ended up solding the Krankenstein, sticking with his 5150.

I think you have to mess up a lot with the "sweep" knob and settings to get a good tone out of it. I think this "sweep" button makes it more difficult for people to find a good sound since they're not used to deal with this setting in addition to the classic EQ/presence/gain settings. I'd like to try the Rev1 again with my own guitar, i think i may like it.

Anyway i've been using an ENGL SE 6L6 for 1 year and half and i've never heard a better sounding amp (for my taste) eversince. I'm thrilled about recording some clips from it with my SM57 and my "Sneap forum knowledge".

I've been thinking about a Fireball or Blackmoore but all the clips I've heard have lacked 'presence' and seemed a bit hallow so to speak.

Could you share some clips?

I have some samples but i did them a while ago and they're kinda "noob-samples" : average (still decent) mic placement, noob settings (a bit too much gain, way too much presence, too much bass), sloppy playing...

I'm gonna recordsome samples soon with better mic. placement, settings, playing... well... everything !

I'm gonna post those on this forum as soon as it's done.

Anyway i've tried the blackmore and fireball in the past and it sounded great (especially the blackmore).

Did you check the ENGL clips at rocksolidamps.com already ?

There is another website with many samples of the Invader and a few ones from both Powerball and SE (taken from an official ENGL cd i have) but i can't find this website anymore.

The Rev is a difficult amp to dial in due to the Sweep Adjustment. Overall it is a Dry sounding amp with less overall saturation than other amps. This can be both good and bad. If you want a plenty of definition and clarity, it can do that, but can sound dry. If you want a saturated sound, you can get it but it can then sound too fizzy/sizzly and lose definition.

That's my "in-a-nutshell" review after having this thing for over a year now.

Here's an example of a Dry sound. Mic was on Edge of Dustcap, Gain on 5/10:

Here's an example of a slightly more Saturated sound. Mic was Between Centre and Edge of Dustcap, Gain on 6/10:

(Try and ignore all the open string noise )

"Gain on 6" had a slightly lower Sweep setting and Lower Pres and Treb than "Gain on 5"

Disclaimer: I don't think either of these clips are brilliant, but thought I would just post them to give some examples to maybe illustrate my opinions/impressions above. :)

I was initially looking at either a 6505 or Rev and used Matt Smith's examples as a comparison. This is a good comparison given it's the same riff, Cab(s), Mic and Preamp. Obviously how the amp's are dialled in will vary the results due to personal preference of bass, mids, treb, pres, etc... In these examples, I preferred the Rev into Small (Traditional) Mesa Cab. Filenames with 1 are Smaller (Traditional) Mesa Cab, 2 is Krank Cab, 3 is Larger (Standard) Mesa Cab.

I am getting a 6505 soon anyway. Hopefully it will be easier to dial in thanks to the lack of a Sweep Adjustment. The blend of the Rev and 6505 will hopefully be nice also.

Thank you very much for you input, greatly appreciated. :kickass:

I do enjoy the 'dry' sound, you have to change your overall playing style though to compensate so to speak. It didn't sound as dry as a VHT of some sort but still had that 'edge' and still organic sounding.

I don't understand why there is so much hate towards the Rev1. I know krank did some really shady marketing scheme and thus hate towards krank but the Rev1 seems to be a damn good sounding amp.

I can see how the 5150 and Rev1 would mesh very well but they are extremely similar IMO. If anyone knows, how much are used Rev1's going in the states?

Thanks again for your input and comparison clips.

when i just saw Behemoth a short while ago, they had kranks onstage with them but played thru Mesa and Laboga. when they tore down you coul see the krank cabs didn't even have speaker jacks on the back or were covered with duct tape. So i talked to one of their roadcrew outside he said they only have them onstage becasue of the endorsment deal, and thet they realy don't like them. That laboga was just wicked andway, and mixed with the RK it was just awesome.

I've mixed a few Kranks live but i've never heard anything special, but here's no dealers in my area so i've never had the opportunity to play with one and see what's it capable of.

You're welcome. FYI, those guitars only had 90Hz-12kHz filtering and a slight narrow cut at 5.7kHz. Listening back to the "Gain on 6" clip today, it's pretty horrid. I could do better than that. Don't take that clip as a valid example, yuck.

Here's a better example of a more saturated tone. It's a song I reamped for Machinated (posts here). Guitars are absolutely RAW as recorded, no eq, etc...

Here's a blend done with Shadow Walker's Custom amp. 2 tracks Rev and 2 tracks Custom Amp from this thread:

thanx, do you know setting on "Rev and 5150 Comparo (by Matt Smith)", especially Rev?

I asked him over a year ago what settings he used and he couldn't remember exactly (since he made the samples quite a bit before that time even) but he said these should get you in a similar ballpark. Not sure on Mic position or anything else though:

Presence: 12:00
Bass 12:30
Mid 9:30
Treble 12:00
Sweep 9:30
Gain 12:30
Volume Loud
Plus a tubescreamer in front (Maxon OD820) with gain at 8 or 9 o'clock and tone and level at noon
