The Unstoppable LUNCH Thread!

yum!

Here is my Shakshuka from the other day... I made one for me and one for my friend Megan
MetalHead87: do you eat yours from the pan ? :D

Looks delicious.

Yeah, I eat it from the pan. For some reason, it actually changes the taste if I pour it into a bowl.
Not to mention that the eggs would break. I love it when the egg white serves as a container for the creamy yolk. That's actually my favorite way to have eggs

Oh, I know that stuff afterall. Retarded Penguin was trying to get me to make it a while ago, he tells me it's delicious.

Ok, I don't follow any recipe when I make this but here is my recipe for it:

(makes enough for one hungry person)

eggs
1 Bell pepper cut to small cubes (I prefer orange or yellow for good colors in the pan)
3-4 big tomatoes chopped
10-15 small cherry tomatoes cut into halves
2 tbs tomato paste
1 zucchini - cut to small slices
1 big onion
a couple of parsley brenches
garlic to taste
cumin to taste
red pepper to taste
salt to taste
oregano to taste
black pepper to taste
Olive Oil

+ Fresh Bread (seriously, it works best with a really fresh bread)

Head the olive oil in a medium pan
fry the onions until soft,
add the garlic, bell pepper and zucchini - fry for a minute
add all the tomatoes - fry until all the juices come out
add the tomato paste: melt into the veggie juices
add all the spices
once boiling hot - make room for the eggs in the middle: and pour 1-2 eggs
- if you want the eggs to be runny: leave uncovered
if you want them thicker: cover and let cook for about 4-5 minutes
remove from head, sprinkle parsley on top:

get the bread: and eat straight from the pan

:)

also: the reason why I use cherry tomatos AND regular tomatoes is to give the Shakshuka a cool texture...
when everything becomes a "mush" it's nice to discover whole pieces of tomatoes in it.
Just a tip.

So is it dense like sloppy joe mix or is it runny like soup? Could I put it in a wrap if I wanted to? Wraps are the new sandwich.

nah- it's not a wrap food. too runny and juicey.
The whole purpose of this food is to be eaten with bread from the pan because it's runny...

I make wraps a lot as well and take them to school Kev! Wraps are awesome.
But a Shakshuka is not a wrap food :D
Also, it is known that when local people make Shakshuka, it tastes better... yes!

hehehe ;)

It depends on how you make it, but it will usually be somewhat runny.

You probably could put it in a wrap if you really wanted to, but it would get very soggy and leak through. Just eat it from the pan and dip bread inside.

And if you really want it as a wrap, don't add the tomato paste or sauce. Just sautee the vegetables, then either have it like that, or add some slices of chicken, salmon, whatever you want.

Yeah.. mine is not that runny, but I guess I meant to say the wrap will be soggy... eeek, I hate soggy sandwiches... :err:

eating it from the pan is the best way.
..and if you really want to go traditionally: eat with fresh bread and tahini on the side

There used to be this Uzbek/Israeli place on 48th between 5th and 6th that made really unbelievable pita. I used to buy the pita (and something to take for lunch), then go to a place on the same block that made fresh shakshuka. It was really incredible.

So today for lunch I'm having a custom made sammich from Whole Foods. Ciabatta bread, peppered turkey, avocado, mixed greens, and blue cheese dressing. It's awesome!
