The what's going on in Thrash thread

Over the years I've been told by some that I should give Pantera more of a chance than I have, so with stupid isolation and not much coming out I've decided to hit up Spotify and borrow a few cds and see what happens. I have heard bits and pieces of Cowboys, Vulger, Driven and Trendkill, but I don't know that I've heard a full cd. Anything before Cowboys I don't remember hearing and I don't remember even hearing about the last album. So I wonder what this could bring.

I do admit that Phil is a big part of the reason I never gave them time. I've never liked him and never appreciated his mouth. But there is also plenty of other musos out there I don't like but listen to their music. I also have no idea what the band sounded like before Phil.

This flyer is from 1989 apparently. Check out Gene, I'm sure he's still got the same glasses. The stance and position of him also looks like nearly every other photo of him since 1989 :)

Oh yeah. No trouble picking Gene out lol.

They sounded like shit before Cowboys. Phil or no Phil.
But I love Cowboys, Vulger and Far Beyond Driven. Especially that one. Go deep on that there's some really good shred. Their last album...meh

I guess I'll find out soon. But what made them shit before Phil? Bad singing or bad music?
I'm listening to the Exhorder demo from '86 right now and compared to their first two albums this does sound shit but it's mostly the production (or lack thereof) that makes it sound shit. Is old Pantera like that or bad everything?

I have barely heard the Terry Glaze stuff. But as I recall it's just cheesy power metal, maybe not even that. The album they did before Cowboys was maybe less cheesy but it lacks the aggression of the later stuff. Hell you might like that stuff, some people do. But to me Cowboys and later is another level in every way. the writing the musician ship. It's just put together very differently.

I wouldn't even call the first album power metal. Cheesy definitely, sounds almost like cock rock and with some of the lyrics I'd almost reckon they were trying to be an 80's Steel Panther (which I guess was Motley Crue).

The song Latest Lover has a catchy hook and there is some cool sounding riffs, but overall there isn't much substance to the first album. You're right they sound like a party band at this point.

Yeah I would never have liked them if I'd heard that stuff back in the day. I didn't hear them until Vulgar came out and then a new friend brought over Cowboys. And I couldn't believe the guy could sing lol. Phils voice like that along with Dimes guitar were sonically really nice and it felt fuller than Vulgar because the guitars are dubbed where as Vulgar just has one guitar going and feels much more raw. And then with Far Beyond Driven they dubbed in two guitars again and it made it really freakin heavy along with there being no ballads. They also do a great version of Planet Caravan by Sabbath. It's like dead on.

I've heard Planet Caravan and Electric Funeral from the Nativity In Black covers album. Both are pretty good.

The second album sounds like Motley Crue with more screams. Still not sure about the power metal label that wiki and other keep suggesting though.

Yeah I didn't really get it either. Just that album that's actually called Power Metal maybe? I think that's when Phil came in?
