The what's going on in Thrash thread

A coworker/friend will be first in line to buy it. He has bought all the other box sets they have released in the last few years and always goes on about them when we discuss music. I have recommended branching out into other bands like Testament, Exodus or Megadeth but he remains a devout Metallica Fanboy.

I knew a guy back in the 90's that bought everything GNR, he'd pay $250 for a bootleg cassette of a shitty live gig recorded on someone's walkman, then a week later he'd buy another one. Devoted fans are certainly the target market and I can't see them thinking these collections will be multi-million sellers but it makes me wonder at what point does it become too much Metallica for even the most dedicated fan.

AJFA anniversary box was $400 here, given this one has more stuff in it I can't imagine what they'll sell it for!

That's crazy. I mean good for him. But I think he'd be a lot happier if he branched out!
All those covers is the real killer for me...not that I'd buy it anyway.

Even if it wasn't priced at $3,000,000,000,000 (or whatever) how desperate is someone for 30+ cover versions of the same songs? All Metallica's anniversary collections have been over the top but this takes the cake.

Yeah. They really just pander to their well off fans. Or people with a lot of disposable income. Knowing what they used to be and how they preached it's a bit disgusting.

I suppose it's a case of knowing your market. The Black album was their best seller, from a marketing angle it makes sense to make it the biggest anniversary edition, but yeah it's an expensive proposition that the casual fan certainly isn't going to buy. It does show the band has come a long way to be able to achieve it but it also does look a bit silly when you look at where they came from.

Yeah it makes you wonder when Metallica will peak, obviously they lost a lot of thrash fans and old school fans but even their shittiest albums of the last few decades sold large numbers, their gigs all sell out and they still sell a shit load of merch. It seems that while they keep making pop albums they are going to keep being able to sell $400 box sets of the same songs.

Seems like James forgot they were selling booze and drank it himself.
I realise no one honestly saw this pandemic coming but before the pandemic when James went into rehab they cancelled their Oz/NZ tour. I'm not begrudging the guy for getting help but his addictions weren't a new thing and when they cancelled the tour it was done so with a unfeeling press release by management, not even the band. What's even worse is that at first they didn't even admit it was for James to go into rehab, just some lame excuse that they couldn't make it. Yet still their fan base grew. They didn't come back after James' stint, despite having time before covid, then they promised they'd come back in '21, now it's been about 6 years since they toured but instead of loosing fans they have gained them. It's totally confusing.

I dont blame Metallica for wanting to cash in and it seems there is still a market for what they are releasing, but I wish they would give back to the metal scene that supported them before they were rock stars on MTV. I would have some respect for them if they would do a return to their roots tour and bring out some old school band like Flotsam and Jetsam and give a break to a young up and coming band like Warbringer or Enforced.

Yeah I can agree with that. I don't think anyone who starts a band doesn't hope to make it one day but Metallica have done so little for the metal community in the last 20 years that it's almost like they don't want to be part of what they helped create. Kirk did give money to Tom Hunting's cancer appeal but that was chump change for anyone in that band.

That's weird you should bring that up. When I saw they booked a European tour I wondered why they didn't go your way first to make up for that.

Not even chump change. Still glad he did something though. Obviously. I know you and I have discussed it before. but for the most part these guys are to good to take part in the scene in general. They don't do any of the tribute stuff the other bands do. None of them participated in the metal allegiance stuff (before it became a band) or Dimebash, etc. Or any interviews when people do docs on the scene or when bands make a doc.
And they don't take any bands out that really deserve the exposure...cause they'd get demolished and all those people would see what real bands sound like live when they aren't living of off pageantry.
I bet if it was a doc on Coldplay or Oasis they'd be right on it.

I'm guessing even for the biggest band it's too expensive for a short leg of a tour. It's not even like our quarantine rules would make a difference, the average Joe can't get out of the country but special people and rich people can come and go as they please. They'd still have to quarantine for 14 days here, pass three covid tests, then they'd play 3, maybe 4 cities to 75% max crowds (because we keep closing down cities). It's at least a three week journey for three shows with the possibility of being caught in a lockdown and not doing a gig. I can see why they wont come here but they still suck for not doing so

Lars, Kirk, and James were in the Bay Area Thrash doco, but those interviews were not unlike the ones in The Metal Years back in the 90's, just a person in front of a camera telling the same story that's been in the press for years.

But little else they do, or have done is to support the industry they came from. They did some charity thing recently, and that's good but still not a part of the metal community. They really do live inside their own little bubble, and when your doing gigs with Lady Gaga and singles with Lou Reed I think it explains why you are in a bubble. I think the telling thing is how many metalheads, people like Gary Holt, AK, etc etc, still talk about Metallica kindly, but Metallica rarely speak about anyone but themselves....oh and Lady Gaga because I think Lars is in love with her.
