The "which demo are you worshipping" Thread

Some stuff I recently added to my RYM demo journal:

Costa Rican avant-tech brutal-slam? Definitely an interesting one, kinda reminds me of Gorguts at times. A band to keep an eye on.

This demo fucking rules! Especially that middle chunk of tracks. If this is any indication of where Arkham Witch are at mentally then their next album is really gonna kick ass. Heavy and catchy the way true metal should be!

The production definitely holds this back, and it's more frustrating because it feels like an intentional aesthetic choice, losing some intricacies in the process. However buried beneath that murk is some very epic progressive death metal with all sorts of nice little melodic and symphonic elements. Recommended for anybody who likes a lot of atmosphere.

Raw and fuzzy UK death metal that plods along in a pretty suffocating way, really grew on me. The faster parts are filthy.

Typically I don't care much for funeral doom with exception of some older classics, but this Scottish demo really wormed its way into my mind as it was playing. Very suffocating atmosphere, and the two middle tracks in particular were great. That synth is heavy!

Every band doing the whole metalcore + brutal death seems to start out with interesting demos only to instantly shit the bed the moment it's time to record a debut. Hopefully that won't be the case with these guys because this was awesome. The production is especially a highlight here, and the vocalist doesn't have that usual throaty hardcore yell but rather sounds more like a late 80's/early 90's death metal vocalist.

This is pretty cool. Lots of NWOBHM/doom in the riffs, at least in the first song.

More stuff I added to my demo journal:

Thrashy, vaguely Voivodian progressive black metal with sweeping triumphant sci-fi keyboards. That's a mouthful! Fun, interesting stuff. Can't wait for the album.

New killer demo of Russian metal that tries (and imo succeeds) to recreate that awkward Soviet era sound between hard rock and heavy metal. No clue what the fuck they're saying but I'm singing along anyway! I think a bloke from Morbital is in this band.

First time hearing this project but I immediately liked the first track. Pretty unhinged sounding, with tons of punkiness to the riffing. Ugly and raw without losing the clarity of any single instrument. The discordant riffing on "The Arid Crossing" is especially great and reminds me of some kinda mutated 70's proto-punk abomination. Black metal doesn't often hit me like this.

Huge fucking potential here from Spain! The mixture of black metal with doom played at both a crawling pace and, at times, an upbeat more trad metal-inspired pace is rough as guts but works really well. Very crushing and infectious.

I'm not usually into straight/classic/regular black metal or whatever you'd call this, but for some reason this demo clicked with me. Especially the title track! This is out of Mexico too, which surprised me.

Outta Brooklyn but sounding much more like ugly 80's Californian hardcore. Very snotty and nihilistic delivery which I like a lot. Vicious feedback too.

The best demos I discovered since my last post:

Gloomy and nihilistic sludge from Italy that kinda flirts on the border with funeral doom and death doom. Good stuff, subtly unique.

Devastatingly heavy, doomy death metal like you'd expect from these Aussie maniacs. Gets me completely hyped for a whole new album.

Big groovy Hungarian death metal! I was not expecting this to be as good as it is for some reason.

Crushing Japanese death metal. If their next album isn't a total neck-snapper I'll be shocked. These 2 back-to-back demos have been fucking fantastic.

Awesome epic metal from Germany here, quite catchy and the singer reminds me of Pagan Altar but by way of The Wizar'd. Risky style but it really works.

Chinese sludge/death doom that sounds like a mixture of Coffins and Anatomia. Really promising band and the main vocalist is heavy as fuck.

Super grubby demo of sick catchy Japanese death metal. Nice taste of what they're planning for the second album and I can't wait.

Dave Boyd from Twisted Tower Dire's new band. Pretty good. Classic heavy metal sometimes veering into power territory.

Easily one of the best demos I've heard this year. Totally crushing blend of death/doom and early 90's brutal death metal. Aggressive and devastatingly heavy. Keenly awaiting to see where this band goes from here.

Top tier pagan black metal right here. Really big on the doomy epic side of things which I love.
