The Winter Beer Report

I dont suppose I could find this stuff served at a resteraunt? There is a place around here that is in an area of town where you cant serve liquor.. so they try to make up for it by having every beer imaginable (or so I have heard).. but something tells me you guys drink like.. the undergound indie rock beers... haha

I didnt mean it like that.. I just meant like.. you drink uberbeer.. tr00 and gr1m... ummm... exclusive.. hard to find... I was trying to make a joke...

THERE IS NOTHING FUNNY ABOUT BEER!

but yeah - try following that wychwood link to the distributor's website or something to see if it's carried out by you. you never know. or just look in the phonebook for your local beverage distros and see what they carry.

Uncle Otto's Oktoberfest is in stores and I got a sixer. While not exactly a winter beer, it's still befitting of the season in flavor. Good malty, nutty flavor.

tried one of the homebrew Hobgoblin clones yesterday - still not quite ready, but it's almost there. It's a little on the sweet and flat side still as the primer sugars haven't been converted to bubbles quite yet. otherwise, the flavor is very pleasant. I'm pleased.

and yesterday we went to the Rogue brewhouse in SF! the food and service was totally meh, but man oh man the beers were SO good. their hazelnut ale is seriously the best thing ever. it almost tastes like cream soda! also tried: chocolate stout (excellent!), the smoked ale (also very good), yellow snow (dece, comparable to New Belgium's Sunshine), and the honey cream (well made, not my thing).

I'm definitely visiting the brewery and stocking up when I'm in Oregon.

we went to Augusta, MO for wine country this weekend. next weekend is Hermann, MO for more wine country. went to one brewery in augusta, but it was MEH. really nice countryside though! lots of the wineries are on big hills, so they're very scenic.

on another note: moved my pumpkin ale from the primary fermentor to the secondary fermentor yesterday and smelled pretty good. will see in a couple weeks what it's like.

ooh you made a pumpkin brew? nice!

we can't decide whether to make a spruce or a hazelnut next. i'm thinking we'll lean towards the former since we are approaching the winter season, but ya never know.

next weekend the belgian gets bottled. wednesday = an additional shot of yeast.

okay, tried some new beers recently from Shipyard Brewery out of Portland ME:

first up:

OLD THUMPER

super delicious english-style ale with a very interesting mix of malty flavors. very very good.

SHIPYARD EXPORT ALE

interesting, but not something I think I'd buy again since it's not my style. halfway between an american and brit style, so it's malty but there's a bit of cascade hoppiness to it too. i guess it's a canadian style ale, so that almost makes sense. decent.

still need to try:

pumpkinhead.jpg

PUMPKINHEAD - their fall beer. I wish they had it in 22s as opposed to only 6-packs, so I've been reluctant to invest so far. but the brewery is good, so I'm gonna give it a shot some point soon.

also - the Hobgoblin clone I made is maturing really nice in the bottle. had another taste yesterday 1 wk after bottling and it's getting better, though still not perfect quite yet. another week or two and it'll kick ass.

aside: what i have noticed about my first batch is that it has progressively gotten stronger grain flavor/more dark and robust and the hop taste that was present in the first couple weeks has faded somewhat. still a great beer, but i think i liked it with more hops taste so i'll probably end up drinking it all soon (about 12 bottles left after giving some away).

okay, I tried the Pumpkinhead. I like it better than the Buffalo Bills, but I think I really just don't dig on pumpkin beer overall. It's okay, but I'd rather taste spruce and juniper for my seasonal brews.

I also looked at a beer industry mag at barnes n nobles the other day and the ads for all the winter beers made my head swirl. can't wait to drink em! i saw the sierra nevada celebration at the store, but I hate that fucking beer. get me something good!

i bottled my pumpkin beer yesterday. tasted a little pre-bottling and it tasted funny; hopefully the priming and a little more fermentation will help it. did definitely taste some pumpkin, but not as much clove/spice as i wanted. nice smell though.

(partially in response to the growing 'on-topic' thread of this morning)

I saw a special winter beer box thingy at Cost Plus the other day, but it didn't really have anything too interesting in it that I haven't tried before. It had Old Thumper, which of course is still great, but I'd just buy what I know is good and skip the rest.

I also saw the dreaded Sierra Nevada celebration ale in the store the other day. Fuck "Sierra Nevada". Damn overuse of cascade hops.

In the slightly on topic department. I drank this year's Ephemere from Unibroue (local, rather large micro-brewerie now). They release a new Ephemere every year for a limited time with a a different flavour, this year being peach, last year it was a cider-beer. It was quite nice since I usually don't like peach-based drinks but this one was really good (the cider one was really yummy last year too)

If you can obtain some of their beers I really recommend a few of them including: La Maudite (really nice red ale, hint of coriander, nice hops flavour), La Trois-Pistole (Dark ale with some balls, very nice finish too), Blanche de Chambly (originally was meant as a copy of the Blanche de Bruges but ended up as good and a little different than the original), Raftman (brewed with whisky malt, different and really good)

I like Unibroue beers, but unfortunately can usually only find a few of em. Maudite is definitely a fave, but I'm not as won over by the rest. They are all great for the style, just not my cup of tea.

Went to the local Pyramid brewery this weekend and had a pint of this year's snowcap. Nice! not my favorite winter ale, but the first true winter brew to be tasted this year!
