There might be hope for metal just yet...

I just got some albums that I've been meaning to *acquire*, whether that be DLing or buying, I can neither confirm nor deny. However, the last month has been practically a rollercoaster ride discovery and re-discovery of some true gems.

Devin Townsend - Ziltoid the Omniscient
Fear Factory - Archetype
Shining - V
The Vision Bleak - Carpathia

Four great bands of completely different styles that are equally exciting. It's nice to see a few islands in a sea of mediocrity.

I don't know what you've been listening to but there's been "hope for metal" if you will, to say the least; for quite some time now. I've never lost hope in it. Too many great releases to do so.

I think one of the biggest reasons people start to think metal is "dying" is because they're unwilling to accept the fact that like everything else in the world, it changes with the times.

If people would be more open-minded, they might discover that things aren't as bad as they let themselves think they are. And hell... maybe it might even make them happier.

Older Fear Factory crushes Archetype though ;) And if you like FF, you should DEFINITELY check out Divine Heresy. Dino's new "Fear Factory times 100" band with Tim Yeung.

dude there are a million metal bands out there that are good. u just gotta know where to look, depending on your tastes.

ziltoid is the album of the year so far for me, easily. amazing album by devin after a disappointing synchestra

Fear Factory - Archetype

That is one of my top 5 favorite albums....its one of those albums that i can listen to and never get sick of.

I'm pretty happy with a lot of recent releases (although I do prefer 80's metal overall).
Melechesh is one of my favorite bands, Enochian Crescent (pick up Black Church), Loch Vostok's Destruction Time Again, Scott Mosher, Orphaned Land, Time Requiem, Winds, pretty much anything on Lion Records (especially Seventh Wonder and Tomorrow's Eve) and Galy Records (like Augury or Martyr), the last Manes and Wolverine albums (although not metal anymore), Pantheon I, Memoria (kind of like an acoustic Opeth), Fortid etc.

I'm probably one of the most open-minded people in the world, and there's a fine line between keeping an open mind and just accepting whatever garbage the metal scene has vomited out in the past few years, with a few exceptions. Metalcore has become so abundant that it dominates everything else in its path because everyone wants to jump on that bandwagon. I swear, if I hear one more band playing the same old polka beat, I'm gonna shoot someone. Of course, there were great albums in the past several years, but not in the volume that it used to be. We had great albums by Nevermore, Behemoth, Nile, Anaal Nathrakh, Arcturus, Devin Townsend, and many others. But compare those numbers of truly great albums to the endless stream of shit being put out by the metalcore scene...that's why I said there's hope for metal just yet.

I've been meaning to check out Divine Heresy...if you guys say it's good, then I know it's damn good. Thanks for the recommendation.

"Endless shit" was always being released. "Older is better" is a pretty cliched mantra, people enjoy romanticizing the past too much.

This is true, but let's be honest. What's better, the latest Killswitch Engage or This Godless Endeavor? A7X or Nile? Emperor's weakest album, "Prometheus", which I thought was great, nonetheless or Unearth?

Of course, it's a matter of taste, but there was a period in which phenomenal albums were being put out one after another, and all I'm saying is that it seems like we're returning to that stage again with the decline of metalcore. We have the new Nile, Behemoth, Zyklon, Anaal Nathrakh, Devin Townsend, Divine Heresy (which I just listened to...wow!), The Vision Bleak, Shining, and lots more.

This thread somehow got turned into "the metal scene sucks now", when that was never mentioned. In fact, the title suggests just the opposite; it's back and better than ever. For those of you who thought it was phenomenal in the past two or three years, I disagree. There were a handful of good albums, but now bands are churning out really great and original stuff by the truckload. It's good to see people burning the bandwagon.

I'm so glad I live in a parallel universe where metal never died and plenty of bands have been putting out incredible albums every year. The selective memories resulting from nostalgia cause one to think there was less crap in the past, but it's always there, learn to ignore it as well in the present.

I can play this game too:

What's better, chocolate chip cookies or dirty toilet seats?
