Things that annoy you about re-issues

For me:

Two albums on one CD.

When the cover art is divided into two separate small pictures on the sleeve.

The cover art is changed completely.

I hate the way Iron Maiden gave us bonus tracks on the first set of CD reissues but replaced them with bullshit videos on the second set.

Also, Dave Mustaine committed a crime against music when he remastered Rust in Peace. He gave it one of those bright, noisy, claustrophobic modern production jobs and changed the guitar tone to that same crappy tone John Petrucci has been using since 1999.

I agree, I dislike it when they change the artwork because the re-issue's artwork is generally is less appealing I find. And I dislike it when there's updated pics of the band - I'd rather have pics of the band from that album's period of time, not current ones.

Also, just a small thing of annoyance - I hate it when you buy an album that's been reprinted, so that on the back of the cd or booklet it will say "2008 Metropolis Records" as opposed to "1998 Metropolis Records" for example, if it was originally released in 1998. It just makes it feel less authentic, I'd rather just have everything the same as the original.

Also, I hate it when nuclear blast comes out with special editions of albums, because they give the album artwork those terribly ugly grey borders, and not only to the front cover but elsewhere...just horrific.

I have EDT by Dimmu of the limited edition, the disc is just a shiny silver surface with album title and band name on it...I seriously would rather just have the original version.

@ malign: that is...well...it's not even in the ballpark. horrendous

the main thing that pisses me off is bonus tracks. more often than not, they're completely useless

I don't like when they include tracks of rough mixes of the original songs. That to me, would be like if I served my dinner guests the bottom of the pot scrapings of the main course, and then ask to be paid.

Useless bonus tracks are definitely a pet peeve. I don't really care about the artwork. Superb artwork won't make a mediocre album good, and vice versa

The only thing I hate is the tacky bonus tracks. 2 things about them...

- If it's a legitimately good studio track, like a b-side not included on the album or a song that they left off of the album, then that's great, I approve. But that kind of stuff shouldn't be on 0-5 year old albums, it has to be a retrospective kind of thing.

- If it's just some freaing single edit or a live version of one of the tracks on the album... fuck off god'dammit. I like to have an album end the way it actually was intended to, not with some throw away piece of shit. You've gotta be very careful with what you ever tack on to the end of an album.

I generally like reissues, except in cases where the cover art is changed. I find that the art is supposed to be an overall representation of the album, and when you change that, you change the album as well.

Generally though, I like bonus tracks, even demos/live ones. Just as long as the sound, isn't too different from the album tracks (IE: Don't use tracks from an entirely different recording session).

I fucking hate 2 albums on 1 cd. 2 albums on 2 cds? yes thats fine, but not 2 on 1.

I dislike major changes in artwork. Small ones I can tolerate fine. For example, on the Displeased re-issue of the first Borknagar album, the logo has been changed from yellow (on the original Malicious records version) to silver, which I personally see as a nice improvement. What I don't like is changing the colours round, for example the Peaceville reissue of Brave Murder Day. While a great example of how to repackage and album and put in some great bonus tracks, we're left with this album cover:

Well its ok, infact its quite good, but this looked nicer:

Although they did a good job with Dance of December souls, that one looks better in dark blue.

Oh, and I hate it when an album is remixed and/ or re-recorded. Remastered is absolutely fine, but remixed? re-recorded? Ashamed of your old product or something? *cough, Megadeth, cough*

To be honest, I don't even like most remasters, except in a couple cases (Black Sabbath's Black Box, for example).

I like the raw, abrasive mixes of the originals, and most remasters make the album sound too glossy.

Combining albums onto 1 cd
Changed artwork

When the lyrics aren't printed (just a general pet peeve, but it's worse with a re-issue), like with the reissues of the first 3 ATG albums. The reissue of SotS was excellent, whatever you may say about the quality of the music itself.

Not many things bother me much about reissues so long as the original tracks aren't fucked with. It's more of a regret in not owning an original copy.

For example, a couple weeks ago I bought the reissue of Sabbat's Dreamweaver, which was chock full of bonus material. However, I promptly refunded it after I went to another record store the same day and found the original issue (used and for cheap!), which I gladly purchased. I'd much rather have an original version than a reissue with extra stuff.

i don't mind when the reissue has an EP tacked onto the end

I actually rather they wouldn't do this. That happened with my Walls of Jericho reissue. The EP is tacked onto the front, but still, it's rather annoying.

Also, combining a short intro track with the second track. That annoys the fuck out of me.

I don't have a lot of reissues. On the version of Powerslave that I have, Back In The Village and the title track are separated at the wrong place, which is a bit annoying.

I ordered In A Flesh Aquarium by UneXpect, and it came with the EP We, Invaders. It said nothing about this on the site I ordered it from, but then, they couldn't even get the band's name right (They called them Unexpected. Morons.)
It was just as cheap as a regular album, so I'm just happy for the extra tracks. The album cover is slightly altered though, and that's somewhat annoying.
