when people have the gall to say to me that the 80s were the worst period in time for music.

For a lot of music they were pretty bad, just not metal.

I think its because most of these people only have heard of the mainstream stuff and dismiss it right there instead of digging a little deeper to find good bands.

the 80s were great for metal...but not for mainstream music, and pretty much every other facet of society...from what I've heard (I was born in 87, so my experience in the 80s wasn't much)

Many great thrash albums were released in the 80s, and the first death metal and black metal albums were released in the 80s as well. I guess that people that say probably mean that the 80s sucked because of all the glam bands that were playing at the time. I personally hate glam and even any metal that even remotely resembles it (ie WASP). So I can see why someone might say something like that, even though I don't agree that the 80s were the worst period in time for music.

Let's all have the same sig as paddy does, it is amazing!:kickass: :kickass: :kickass: :kickass: :kickass: :kickass: Can I have it too paddy? I mean the sex, booze, metal sig.:kickass: :kickass: :kickass:

the 80s and early 90s are the best period of metal. after that it stopped it gettin good. 1995 or 96 was the last GREAT year of metal. im not saying its dead but if it continues with all the melodic death metal and power/prog metal bands then maby. i say bring back thrash and stick with it till the world ends.

Well we can compare it to the other decades in which metal was around.
60's -- My knowledge on the subject is minimal, but metal consisted of mainly Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin in those days
70's -- Metal was on it's deathbed when it was brought back to the forefront by Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Very good music going on in these days.
80's -- Metal became dominant with hair metal and other cheesy quasi-metal acts, such as Def Leppard and Motley Crue. Although the level of cheese and stupidity was extraordinary, the music in this time was pretty good. Ozzy made great music in this time, and Thrash, Death, and Black were created. In terms of creativity this may be the best decade.
90's -- Metal moves to the underground with the coming of grunge, and largely stays there. Great music was being made, along with horrible nu-metal acts.
00's -- Metal remains in the underground, but is thriving and pushing creative boundries. Nu-metal dies early in the decade and the main enemy of metal is metalcore, which is a vast improvement over nu-metal. A very good decade in my opinion.

Because they are morons. This decade is a much better candidate for worst decade for music.

WRONG. Zeppelin isn't metal, and there were a few other metal bands around besides Sabbath.

70's -- Metal was on it's deathbed when it was brought back to the forefront by Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Very good music going on in these days.

WRONG. Iron Maiden's debut came out in 1980. But you are correct in the fact that did help metal. Duh =P

Yay. You were right!

WRONG. Metal has always been underground in one for or another. Most people just relate Metal dying to all of the Glam bands blowing all of their cash and becoming nobodies after 1990. Some of the best music ever made was around the years 90-93.

00's -- Metal remains in the underground, but is thriving and pushing creative boundries. Nu-metal dies early in the decade and the main enemy of metal is metalcore, which is a vast improvement over nu-metal. A very good decade in my opinion.

Meh.
