Thrash!

I figured I'd promote my friend's band again. He claims to be obsessed with this vision of what Thrash Metal can be and is trying to make it a reality. He's downpicking at 300 bpm, and apparently this is impressive. I of course know nothing about guitar. He's working on a song about Vietnam, and here's a clip of some of the ideas for the song:

He says that the next album (probably an EP) is going to be a lot more complex and original, and that he pretty much considers this first album a demo. He talks about Coroner and Voivod an awful lot, if that gives you an idea of what he may be aspiring to. I need to introduce him to Mekong Delta...

Sounds pretty good. 300 bpm downpicking (only hitting the string on the way down) means he can probably do more than 600 bpm using alternating type picking (hitting it up and down). I don't know why people strive to play with all downpicks. Maybe it has a distinct sound. I think Hetfield is a fan of downpicking.

He says that it provides a crisper tone that makes it more tight and angular. He insists that the slight change in timbre adds a lot.

If you want to promote him, you could start by telling us the band's name.
Downpicking at 300bpm...depends. I can downpick half-notes at 2000bpm if I want. There was just a whole debate on this in the Musician's Discussion, but the sum of it is that the bpm means nothing if we don't know what kind of notes he's playing.

As for that video, it was cool. That didn't all look like downstrokes, but we can't really see too well.

I would think you get more force just downpicking than alternate picking, which provides for the change in timbre

this is true. using all downpicking gives you a more consistent sound and is "thrashier." I always use downpicking when possible.

Rigor Mortis - Freaks just rules. Well, all except that part in freaks where they play that riff like 200 times in a row. Why did they do that?

I know, it's probably closer to death metal, but it's early and still seems connected to thrash.
