Tips on creating grim vocals. (Part 2)

Anything and everything will help me. I do not know much about creating black metal vocals and I have a song finished, save vocals. I really want to completely finish off the song but my incompetance with vocals is preventing that.

Get the back of your throat nice and tight, open up wide on every syllable, and let loose the blasphemous gibberish. Make sure you have plenty of breath, too.

Yell while gargling in the back of your throat... for black metal make a kind of "AAA" yell, with your mouth open wide (if it was for death metal you'd make more of an "Oh" shape). Fortunately a lot of great black metal doesn't focus that much on vocals, so as long as it sounds grim its all good.

I actually think my black metal vocals are quite decent, how ever i can't low growl.

Also, I can do black metal screams decently...for a few seconds. When I try to prolong it (screaming an entire verse, for instance) my throat doesn't let me hold the harshness in the back and then my voice sounds like shit. :/

John K is greek and is an awesome vocalist. Can go from Chuck Billy/Phil Anselmo growls to Dickinson/Tate wails to Halford screams. Not bad for someone who never took vocal lessons.

I used to be pretty good at growling, now I cant do it at all. Not sure what happened. I'll stick to singing clean and high pitched in the car untill I find a band.

it all comes from the gut and lots of air. the way you form your mouth is key, too. lower has a more closed mouth, higher has a... more open mouth. uhhh yeah...
