Tips on creating grim vocals. (Part 2)

Here's a tip:
If you need a tip, you already failed at being grim.
Try something else, I hear ping pong is fun.

The stereotypical black metal scream is almost intirely guttural. Often used in conjuction with a rasp and controlling the amount of air escaping from your throat you can achieve different sounds. However if you ever want to be able to do clean vocals properly you must carefully develop a technique which causes minimal to no damage to the vocal chords. Death metal vocals derive there power from the diaphragm. The tongue is inportant for annunciation (or lack there of) in syllables, some do it better than others (see- Paul of Novembers Doom, he has AMAZING power over his voice).

You actually use your diaphragm for all vocals especially ones using grit. What I reccomend is trying to gargle with no water. Feel where that sound is coming, it's from your soft pallette. Now imagine the sound that your voice makes when you first get up in the morning, that crackly grumbly sound. This is called vocal fry. Now you want a combination of these two effects and focusing the sound always at the soft pallette which is clearly above the throat and vocal cords. This is so you don't burn out your throat. Now before you do the growl breath deeply filling from your stomach up. Now focus the force downwards kinda like going to the toilet. This is how you do growls so they don't hurt you and properly.

Here is a clip of me trying to explain it, I am not a growler primarily at all. I sing power and traditional but this is something I tried learning.

I repeat I am not great :p

I have already created the vocals I needed, although they are not very good. Your dictated explanation was not in vain though, it was rather amusing. :kickass: Check out my "Solo Project" thread if you want to hear the vocals I ended up being capable of with very little practice.

True, I was referring to the power derived from most well done death metal vocals in this instance. But we all should know its much more difficult to develop excellent proper singing techniques:danceboy:

Por favor, can you relay your clean vocal tips?

It's too hard to just give clean vocal tips like that. If you guys have specific questions I will try my best to help. I will try and keep an eye on this Nevermore board a bit more. Spend most of my time on LORD and Power Quest. I will stay away from that horrid COB forum, love the band and all they have done but can't stand that board.

Hmmm, how the hell do you stay in tune?
Ok, if you are really bad at this I suggest getting a pitch wheel. When you blow into it you will hear a pitch now try and sing into it/hum into it and match the frequency. You will hear a wowowowowowowow effect as you get closer to the pitch. This is called beat phenomena. Now you wanna get dead on the note and avoid this beat. This means you are in tune. After you get used to doing this try playing a melody on guitar or piano and then sing that. Record yourself so you can hear how it sounds.

I reccomend buying Raise Your Voice from world renowned vocal coach Jaime Vendera also. www.thevoiceconnection.com, his book helped me heaps.

I tried to make a clip of this beat frequency sensation. So you can get used to how to be on key. You will notice when I match the frequency behind it goes away.

Hope this helps: http://media.putfile.com/Staying-In-Key

Wow doug, looks like you really have some great tips to offer. I know I'll be trying out a few things you mentioned for sure, especially on the low growls.
